In February 2024
Passenger traffic at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 2.9% year-on-year
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, based on information from ANA – Airports of Portugal, the first data regarding air transport in the ARM for the month of February 2024.
In the referenced month, the ARM airports recorded a movement of 342.9 thousand passengers, transported on 2,351 aircraft (commercial flights), reflecting year-on-year changes of +2.9% and -3.4%, respectively. It is noteworthy that passenger movement resumed growth this month after a decrease observed in the previous month, which had interrupted a growth cycle of nearly 3 years.
In the first two months of 2024, changes in aircraft and passenger movements were -6.8% and -0.1%, respectively.
Each aircraft (considering both landings and take-offs) transported, on average, about 151 passengers (143 in February 2023) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport, this figure exceeded 63 passengers (61 in the same month of the previous year).

In February 2024, domestic and international passenger traffic at the ARM airports showed a negative year-on-year change in international traffic (+0.3%) and in the domestic segment (+5.9%).
At Madeira Airport, international traffic (52.4%) predominated over domestic traffic (47.6% of the total). At Porto Santo Airport, there is a predominance of domestic traffic (63.6% of the total), albeit with a lesser disproportion compared to January 2024.
In this reference month, regular flights at the ARM airports accounted for 92.2% of the total aircraft movements and 93.7% of passengers (93,0% and 95,0% in the same period last year, respectively).
In February 2024, the occupancy rate of aircraft movements at the ARM airports was approximately 86.1%, with Madeira Airport reaching 86.5% and Porto Santo at 72.7%. In the same period of the previous year, the occupancy rate was lower, at 80.6%, 81.4%, and 65.2%, in that order.
From January to February 2024, the passengers embarked and disembarked at the ARM airports totalled 654.1 thousand, with half corresponding to traffic exclusively between airports located within the national territory, including interior and domestic connections (48.0% of the total together), and the other half to international traffic (52.0%). Within the latter scope, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for international flights from the ARM airports (32.9%), followed by Germany (20.3%) and France (4.6%).
In the IATA Winter (International Air Transport Association) from October 26, 2023 to March 28, 2024, Madeira Airport operated commercial flights from 28 airlines (30 in the IATA Winter 22/23), with 62 routes (58 in the same period last year) to 56 destinations (53 in the IATA Winter 22/23). At Porto Santo Airport, commercial flights were operated on 5 routes (4 in the IATA Winter 22/23), by 5 airlines (4 in the same period last year) to 5 destinations (4 in the IATA Winter 22/23).
