Passenger movements increased in all collective means of transport compared to 2013; movement of goods in the regional seaports and airports decreased
According to the data compiled by DREM, in 2014, the passenger transport by bus increased by 0.8% when compared to 2013. In the year of reference, 17.5 million passengers were counted in the urban lines (+0.1%) and 8.1 million in the intercity lines (+2.1%).
In air transport, the airports of Madeira and Porto Santo recorded a movement of 2.6 million passengers during 2014, a 4.0% increase compared to 2013.
In sea transport, the Ports’ authority counted three cruise ships less in the seaport of Funchal during 2014 (total of 283 of this type of vessels). However, the number of transit passengers increased by 0.2%. The seaport of Funchal received a total of 472,534 transit passengers, the majority of which (90.2%) Europeans. In 2014 and compared to the prior year, there were more Germans visiting Madeira (180,885, change rate of +21.3%), but fewer British (160,714;-9.9%) and Americans (23,053; -27.3%).
The transport of passengers in the sea line between the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo grew by 1.3%, reaching a total of 251,979 in the year of reference.
Regarding the movement of goods in Madeira's ports, the statistics for 2014 show decreases for both unloaded (-2.6%) and loaded goods (-2.9%).
Vehicle sale registries made by the Vehicle Registration Offices of Madeira dropped in 2014
In 2014, the Vehicle Registration Offices of Madeira registered the sale of 11,449 vehicles (new and used), 79.8% of which were light passenger vehicles and 18.4% light cargo vehicles. The sale of 201 heavy vehicles (1.8% of the total) was also registered during this period. There were 895 registries less than in 2013 (-7.3%).
