In the 1st quarter of 2015

Passenger movement in the airports and ports of Madeira increased compared to the corresponding period of 2014; traffic of goods in the regional seaports showed an upward trend

According to the data compiled by DREM, the passenger transport by bus in the reference period decreased by 3.2% year-on-year.  Between January and March of 2015, 4.3 million passengers were counted in the urban lines (year-on year change rate of -4.3%) and 2.0 million in the intercity lines (-0.9%).

In air transport, the airports of Madeira and Porto Santo recorded a movement of 552.1 thousand passengers during the 1st quarter of 2015, a 8.5% increase compared to the same period of 2014.

In sea transport, the Ports authority counted 89 cruise ships in the seaport of Funchal in the 1st quarter of 2015 (down by two over the corresponding quarter of the previous year), while the number of transit passengers rose by 7.6%. The seaport of Funchal received a total of 171,170 transit passengers, the majority of them (92.3%) Europeans. Between January and March of 2015, there were more Germans visiting Madeira aboard cruise ships (82,567, year-on-year change rate of +5.9%), but fewer British (40,009; -7.6%). The transit passengers with American (U.S.) and Italian nationality also rose by 168,5% and 21,5%, respectively.

Regarding the movement of goods in Madeira's ports, the statistics for the 1st quarter of 2015 show a 9.8% increase in the unloaded goods, while the loaded goods dropped by 2.8% over the same period of the previous year.

Vehicle sale registries made by the Vehicle Registration Offices of Madeira in the 1st quarter of 2015 rose by 9.4% year-on-year

In the 1st quarter of 2015, the Vehicle Registration Offices of Madeira registered the sale of 3,107 vehicles (new and used), 80.5% of which were light passenger vehicles and 17.2% light cargo vehicles. The sale of 70 heavy vehicles (2.3% of the total) was also registered during this period. The number of registries went up by 268 compared to the same period of 2014 (+9.4%).
