In the 1st quarter of 2016

Passenger movement in the airports and ports of Madeira increased compared to the corresponding period of 2015; traffic of goods in the regional seaports dropped

According to the data compiled by DREM, the passenger transport by bus in the reference period decreased by 1.9% year-on-year.  Between January and March of 2016, 4.2 million passengers were counted in the urban lines (year-on year change rate of -2.3%) and 2.0 million in the intercity lines (-1.1%).

In air transport, the airports of Madeira and Porto Santo recorded a movement of 620.9 thousand passengers during the 1st quarter of 2016, a 12.5% increase compared to the same period of 2015.

In sea transport, the Ports authority counted 82 cruise ships in the seaport of Funchal in the 1st quarter of 2016 (down by seven over the corresponding quarter of the previous year), while the number of transit passengers dropped by 0.2%. The seaport of Funchal received a total of 170,799 transit passengers, the majority of them (92.1%) Europeans. Between January and March 2016, there were more Germans visiting Madeira aboard cruise ships (76,545, year-on-year change rate of -7.3%), followed by the British (60,222; +50.5%) and the Italians (5,412; -43,3%).  An additional remark to the passenger movement in the Madeira – Porto Santo sea line, which went up by 36.9% year-on-year.

Regarding the movement of goods in Madeira's ports, the statistics for the 1st quarter of 2016 show a 4.0% decrease in the unloaded goods, while the loaded goods grew by 0.7% over the same period of the previous year.

Vehicle sale registries made by the Vehicle Registration Offices of Madeira in the 1st quarter of 2016 rose by 2.1% year-on-year

In the 1st quarter of 2016, the Vehicle Registration Offices of Madeira registered the sale of 3,173 vehicles (new and used), 82.7% of which were light passenger vehicles and 16.0% light cargo vehicles. The sale of 38 heavy vehicles (1.2% of the total) was also registered during this period. The number of registries went up by 66 compared to the same period of 2015 (+2.1%).

DREM also releases today the chapters of the publication “Transport statistics for the Autonomous Region of Madeira-2015” with data for land and air transport. When the final data for sea transport becomes available, the publication will be released in its entirety.
