Number of overnight stays generated by the national market exceeded the values of 2019
The flash estimate of the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of June 2021 shows that 71.6 thousand guests were registered generating 366.4 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of 1 027.5% and 1 749.2%, respectively. It should be noted that in June 2020, with the restrictions inherent to the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism activity registered only 6,347 guests and around 19,800 overnight stays.
Comparing June 2021 with June 2019, there is a huge drop of 46.0% in guests and 52.4% in overnight stays. Noteworthy is the fact that the number of overnight stays in June 2021 was the highest since the beginning of the pandemic.
In the first six months of the year 2021, the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded 965.6 thousand overnight stays (-34.4% than in the same month of 2020). To compare the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourism accommodation establishments shows a decrease of 40.8%, a larger drop than in the national level (-21.3%).
In the Region, overnight stays from residents in Portugal increased by 693.6% year-on-year, reaching 141.1 thousand and representing 38.5% of the total, while bednights from foreign residents went up by 10,997.0% compared to June 2020, standing at 225.3 thousand. Compared to June 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +21.1%, while in the case of foreign residents it stood at -65.5%. The number of guests resident in Portugal was estimated at 35.6 thousand, a value very close to the foreign guests who were 35.9 thousand.
In the country, in June 2021, overnight stays from residents (share of 58.7%) contributed with 2.0 million and non-residents with 1.4 million. Compared to June 2019, there was a decrease of 7.6% in overnight stays from residents in Portugal and of 72.0% in overnight stays from non-residents.

In the Region, the main source markets of non-residents recorded some recovery in terms of overnight stays compared to the previous month (+52.9%). The United Kingdom market accounted for 44.0 thousand in the reference month, followed by Germany with 35.0 thousand and France with 25.3 thousand.
In June, 42.0% of tourism accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. However, in the reference month, the hotel sector had 71.6% of the establishments with a guest flow (60.8% in May).
