Aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals registered a 7.3% increase when compared to 2018
Data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for 2019 show that the aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT) stood at 1.8 billion euros (an all-time record), increasing by 7.3% compared with the previous year, below the 6.1% increase registered in Portugal. While the cash withdrawals grew by 3.7%, the purchases through ATP rose by 9.8%. In turn, the amount spent on payments had a 7.5% increase.
International cards were used to withdraw 59.3 million Euros (1.4% increase), while the amount of withdrawals using national cards totalled 645.4 million Euros, a 4.0% growth when compared with 2018.
At the country level, national withdrawals rose by 2.9%, but the international withdrawals decreased by 1.5%. The average growth in withdrawals was 2.6%.
Concerning purchases through automatic payment terminals, the growth rate for 2019 was higher in Autonomous Region of Madeira (+9.8%) than in Portugal (+8.4%). In the Region, the purchases through APT using national cards increased by 9.8% while those made using international cards rose by 9.9%.

DREM updates the time series on the Multibanco network operations
Since the year 2019 has come to an end, DREM updated the time series on the Multibanco network operations, the first year of data being, in most cases, 1997. Data on operations, withdrawals, consultations, payments, purchases through APT, number of terminals and ATM machines are now available.
