In 2022
Main fuels released for consumption increased by 7.0% over the previous year
According to data provided by Alfândega do Funchal, in 2022, the main fuels released for consumption (diesel oil and gasoline) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 152.3 million litres, having grown by 7.0% compared to 2021. The information broken down by main fuel type shows that 107.3 million litres were released for consumption in the reference period, up by 4.4% over the previous year. With regard to gasoline, the demand for unleaded 95 gasoline increased by 20.3% while the demand for unleaded 98 went down by 6.1%. The sales of these fuels were 36.0 and 9.0 million litres, respectively.
Concerning the gas sector, the release for consumption of propane and butane in 2022 stood at 11.9 (+11.1%) and 5.6 thousand tonnes (-1.5%), respectively, compared to the previous year. In turn, 23.6 thousand tonnes of natural gas were released for consumption in the reference year, a decrease of 14.2% compared to 2021.
It should be highlighted that the analysis of the available time series (2008-2022) shows that the introduction in the consumption of the main fuels (diesel and petrol) was the highest in the last 11 years.
Taking into consideration the 4th quarter of 2022, the main fuels released for consumption (diesel oil and gasoline) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira totalled 38.1 million litres, declining by 0.4% compared to the same period of the previous year.
In that quarter, 26.3 million litres of the main fuel - diesel oil - were released for consumption, down by 3.4% over the year-ago period. Regarding gasoline, the demand for unleaded 95 gasoline increased by 10.2%, while the demand for unleaded 98 decreased by 3.9% between October and December 2022. The sales of these fuels were 9.4 and 2.3 million litres, by the same order.
As for gas, the release for consumption of propane and butane stood at 3.4 and 1.5 thousand tonnes, respectively (+2.8% and -0.5% than in the same period of the previous year, respectively), while 2.7 thousand tonnes of natural gas were released for consumption in the 4th quarter of 2022.
Mean prices in 2022 were higher than in 2021
In 2022, the mean maximum retail prices of diesel oil stood at 1.688 euros, increasing by 31.5 cents compared to the 2021 mean. A similar trend was observed with the unleaded 95 gasoline, whose average price was 1.788 euros, rising by 19.7 cents between 2021 and 2022. This increase is related to the rise in oil prices in international markets, driven by the conflict in Ukraine.
In the 4th quarter of 2022, the mean price for diesel oil was 1.660 euros, above that registered in the previous year (1.501 euros) but below that registered in the quarter before (1.747 euros). If compared to the last quarter of 2022, the average price of the unleaded 95 gasoline shows a decrease of 3.3 cents (1.669 euros) compared to the same period in the previous year and a drop of 14.2 cents vis-a-vis the previous quarter.
