In 2022/2023
40% of the average expenditure per household in the Region was allocated to housing
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases the provisional results related to expenditure from the Household Budget Survey (IDF) 2022/2023 for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), conducted between February 2022 and February 2023. The survey covered a representative sample of households residing in the country, with regional stratification. The regional sample consisted of 1,480 accommodations, evenly distributed over the 26 bi-weekly periods that constituted the survey period.
The main objective of this five-year operation is to determine the volume and structure of household expenditure according to the Classification of Individual Consumption according to Purpose (COICOP-2018). This contributes to determining the consumption structure for calculating the weights of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and provides information on final household consumption to the Portuguese National Accounts. The results presented are based on total (monetary and non-monetary) annual average expenditures per household.
According to the provisional results of IDF 2022/2023, the average annual total expenditure per household of residents in the ARM was 24,363 euros, representing an increase of 33.8% compared to the average annual total expenditure of 18,204 euros recorded in 2015/2016.
At the NUTS 2 level, Norte stands out as the region with the highest average annual total expenditure per household, amounting to 25,057 euros. Following is Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (A.M. Lisboa) with 24,491 euros and the Autonomous Region of Madeira with 24,363 euros, all above the national average of 24,190 euros. Among the other regions below the national average, the Autonomous Region of the Azores (ARA) has the lowest average annual expenditure at 20,439 euros.
Analysing the structure of the average annual total expenditure by COICOP division, in the ARM, 39.8% (9,696 euros) was allocated to Housing expenses (including costs related to water, electricity, gas, and other fuels), which, together with Transport expenses (13.1%, 3,203 euros), and Food and non-alcoholic beverage products (11.1%, 2,714 euros), accounted for 64.0% of the average annual total expenditure of resident families in the ARM.
The consumption structure of the average annual total expenditure in the ARM is very similar to that of the country, with a similar concentration of expenditure in these three components at the national level, where 64.4% of the average annual expenditure is distributed among "Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels" (39.1%), "Food and non-alcoholic beverages" (12.9%), and "Transport" (12.4%).
