Between January and September 2020
Egg production, livestock slaughterings and landed catch registered a year-on-year decrease while poultry meat increased
According to the data collected by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira from the aviculture enterprises in the Region, in the first nine months of 2020, the egg production stood at 14.0 million units, decreasing by 6.3% year-on-year while the poultry meat totalled 2,705.6 tonnes, rising by 15.4% when compared to the same period of 2019. The year-on-year change rates for the 3rd quarter 2020 for egg production and poultry meat were -12.5% and +11.6%, respectively.
Between January and September 2020, the weight of the slaughtered livestock decreased by 10.5% year-on-year. The year-on-year decrease for the 3rd quarter stood at 22.3%.
The data on landed catch, provided by the Regional Directorate of Fisheries, show that the volume of fish landed was 4,059.7 tonnes, which generated 12.0 million euros in receipts. Compared to the same period last year, this represented a decrease in the first nine months of 2020 of 44.2% in volume and of 39.3% in first sale receipts.
This growth was driven by the contribution of the catch of tuna and tuna-like species (-58.4% in volume and -52.8% in value, compared to the same period of 2019). The second most important species - black-scabbard fish - also had a decrease in volume (-3.9%) and in sales (-14.4%).
In the reference period, the mean value of fish landed was €2.99 (€2.74 in the same period of 2019), with the average price for tuna and similar reaching €2.89 (2.55€ in the first nine months of 2019). In the case of the black scabbardfish the mean value was €3.05 (€3.42 in the same period of last year). It should be mentioned that these ratios exclude the unloaded fish destined for self-consumption.
