DREM releases the data of the Survey on the structure of agricultural holdings 2016

(revised June 18, 2018)

Between October of 2016 and March of 2017, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) surveyed around 1,064 Madeiran farmers. This statistical operation was coordinated at a national level by Statistics Portugal (INE).

Main results

According to the Survey on the structure of agricultural holdings/2016, there are 11,628 agricultural holdings in Madeira, with a total of 4,893 hectares (1 hectare = 100 ares = 10,000m2) of Utilised Agricultural Area (UAA). Compared with the Survey on the structure of agricultural holdings/2013, the number of holdings dropped by 3.6%, while the UAA decreased 7.0%. The average UAA decreased from  4,365 m2 in 2013 to 4,212 m2 in 2016.

Breaking down the number of holdings by classes of UAA it becomes clear that the decrease in the number of holdings was due to the decline in the number of holdings in the class of 0.5 ha to 2.0 ha of UAA.

In the temporary crops (1,873 ha, -13.4% than in 2013), it should be highlighted the increase in the area of horticulture (+11.7%), which remains as the most important temporary crop, with a base area of 937.6 ha. In the permanent crops it should be emphasized the decrease in the area of Citrus plantations from 83.6 hectares in 2013 to 75.2 ha in the year of reference. However the overall drop in the permanent crops (-0.9%) was determined by the decrease in the subtropical fruit plantations and in the area of vineyard by 1.9% in both cases.

In 2016, the familiar agricultural population totaled 35,062, up by 85 persons from 2013. Of that total 11,538 were sole holders. For the first time, there are more female (50.9%) than male sole holders. The average age of the Madeiran sole holders is 65.

96.0% of the single holders assure that they will carry on with their agricultural holding.
