In 2021

Large-Sized Commercial Units (LSCU) grew by 9.7% compared to the previous year while employment increased by 3.8%

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) makes available today the information on Large-Sized Commercial Units (LSCU) for the year 2021, published on the 5th of December by Statistics Portugal (INE). A LSCU is an establishment, considered individually or as part of a group belonging to the same company or group of companies, where commercial activity is carried out and which has an exhibition and sales area of relevant size.

In 2021, there were 88 retail trade establishments in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, 67.0% of which were dedicated to non-food retail and 33.0% to food retail or with food predominance. It should be noted that a substantial part of these establishments (81.1%) belonged to enterprises headquartered in Mainland Portugal.

In that year, Madeira’s large-sized commercial units employed 2,863 workers (+3.8% compared to the previous year), 68.6% of whom were women, with 19.6% of the total being temporary employees. These units generated a turnover of 502.7 million euros in 2021 (+9.5% compared to 2020).

Food retail, with 29 establishments, generated a turnover of 345.0 million euros (327.6 million euros in 2020), while the 59 non-food retail establishments sold 155.7 million in goods (128.8 million euros in the previous year).

On average, each food retail establishment declared an annual sales value of 11.9 million euros, a figure that drops to around 2.6 million euros for non-food retail establishments.

In 2021, the exhibition and sales area in food retail reached 36.8 thousand m2, and in non-food retail 42.7 thousand m2.

The number of transactions carried out in LSCU establishments stood at 22.1 million. In food retail, the average value per transaction corresponded to 19.7 euros (20.0 euros in 2020) and in non-food retail to 33.8 euros (32.3 euros in 2020).

In food retail units, sales of "food products, beverages and tobacco" represented 80.1% of total sales (-1.0 pp compared to 2020). In this group, "meat and meat products" (15.1%), "other food products" (14.8%) and "fruits and vegetables" (12.4%) were the main products sold. Among the non-food products sold in these units (19.9% of total sales), "cosmetics and toilet products" (8.2%), "other sales and products" (4.5%) and "household cleaning materials and similar products" (4.0%) were the most important.

In non-food retail establishments, the products with the most significant sales were "clothing and accessories" (30.4%), "computers and optical, photographic and telecommunications equipment" (15.9%), "electrical appliances" (12.3%) and "furniture and other household goods" (9.6%).

In 2021, the sale of private label products was 181.5 million euros in LSCU establishments (+13.6% compared to 2020), representing 33.3% and 42.8% of the overall sales volume of the food and non-food segments, respectively (in the same order, 33.5% and 38.8% in 2020).  

Regarding the means of payment used, debit and credit cards were used in 66.9% of sales in food retail (62.6% in 2020) and 71.6% of sales in non-food retail (71.0% in 2020). Cash payments accounted for 32.1% of total food retail sales (36.7% in 2020) and 23.9% of non-food retail sales (24.3% in 2020).
