Flash Estimate - In December 2023, the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a year-on-year growth of 2.9% in overnight stays
According to preliminary data for the tourist accommodation sector in the Region, it is estimated that, in the month of December 2023, the establishments recorded 131.2 thousand guests, generating 686.7 thousand overnight stays, representing year-on-year changes of +2.5% and +2.9%, respectively. Compared to December 2019, there were increases of 49.4% and 40.0%, respectively, for the same indicators.
The cumulative figures for guest arrivals from January to December 2023 (2.1 million, +17.8% compared to 2022) surpassed all previous annual peaks, as did the overnight stays, which exceeded 10.9 million (+13.6% over 2022 and +34.5% compared to 2019).
For comparability with data released by Statistics Portugal (INE), it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. According to this methodology, overnight stays in tourist accommodation in December 2023 showed a year-on-year decrease of 1.0%, contrasting with the national trend (+8.2%).
In the Region, overnight stays by residents of Portugal increased by about 0.9% compared to the same month last year, reaching approximately 110.6 thousand (16.1% of the total), while those by residents abroad increased by 3.3%, totalling 576.1 thousand. It's notable that compared to December 2019, the changes in overnight stays by residents in Portugal and residents abroad were +88.2% and +33.4%, respectively. In December 2023, there were 32.6 thousand guests from Portugal and 98.5 thousand from abroad.
In the country as a whole, in December 2023, the growth of external markets continued to slow down compared to the previous month (+7.5%; after +10.1% in November), with 2.5 million overnight stays recorded. Conversely, overnight stays by residents continued to accelerate (+9.3%; after +2.7% in November), reaching 1.6 million. By region, Alentejo and Centro stood out with the highest increases in overnight stays (+19.3% and +17.6%, respectively). The Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira were the only regions to experience a decrease in the number of overnight stays this month (-5.7% and -1.0%, respectively).

The first estimated data for the reference month in the Region show that markets emitting residents from abroad accounted for 83.9% of the total overnight stays. Within this group, the German market recorded the highest number of overnight stays in December 2023, with approximately 150.9 thousand (+4.5% compared to the same month last year), followed by the United Kingdom, with 140.4 thousand (-6.6%), and France, with 23.5 thousand (-19.4%).
In December 2023, 13.8% of tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not record guest activity.
