The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today on its website, the Time Series on Social Protection, updated with information from 2020. The majority of the tables begin in the year 2004.

1. Social Security - Number of pensioners increased slightly

At the end of 2020, there were 66.8 thousand Social Security pensioners in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, corresponding to 26.3% of the resident population. From that total, 63.1% received old-age pensions, 27.4% survival pensions and 9.5% disability pensions. Compared to 2019, the number of pensioners increased by 0.8%, as a result of the growth in the number of old-age and survival pensions (1.5% and 0.3% respectively). The number of disability pensions decreased by 1.8%.

The annual mean value paid to pensioners rose by 2.3% between 2019 and 2020, to 5,081 euros, because of an increase in the average values of old-age and survivors' pensions (+2.5% and +3.0%, respectively). The average value of the disability pensions decreased by 1.0%. In this year, the mean paid value in old-age pensions stood at 5,895 euros, above the average value of the disability (5,654 euros) and survival pensions (3,033 euros).

The total value paid reached 349.4 million euros, up by 3.1% over the previous year. Of this total, 73.1% was destinated for old-age pensions (255.3 million euros), 16.4% for survival pensions (57.4 million euros), and 10.5% for disability pensions (36.7 million euros). Compared to 2019, there were positive changes of 4.0% in the amounts processed in old-age pensions and of 3.0% in survivors' pensions. Regarding the amounts processed in disability pensions, there was a negative change of 2.6%.

There were 11.2 thousand individuals receiving unemployment benefits, up by 16.3% from the previous year, and of these 53.3% had not received this benefit in 2019. The distribution of unemployment benefit recipients by both sexes was balanced: 47.8% were men and 52.2% were women. As for ages, 23.5% corresponded to individuals aged 30 to 39 years, followed by the groups aged 40 to 49 years (22.8%) and 55 and over (22.1%). Around 7.4% were young people (under 25 years of age).

The average duration of the unemployment benefit was 194 days, higher than in 2019 (189 days). The average value of this type of benefit was 3,104 euros, a 7.7% increase over the previous year.

With regard to the main family benefits of Social Security, in 2020, the number of recipients of the child allowances increased by 4.6% and the number of recipients of allowances for assistance by a third party decreased by 4.6%.

As for the social integration income, about 7 thousand persons (of which 48.3% males), benefited from this social income, up by 2.4% from 2019. By age groups, 36.4% of the recipients were under 25 years. The amount processed in this social benefit ascended to 8.4 million euros, increasing by 4.2% compared to 2019.

The recipients of sickness benefits decreased by 6.4% between 2019 and 2020, reaching a total of 11.6 thousand persons this year. The mean number of days processed for this type of benefit stood at 90 days, up by 15 from the previous year. The total paid values amounted to 21.6 million euros, an increase of 21.3% compared to 2019.

In 2020, 12.1 million euros were processed for the 3,516 recipients of the social provision for inclusion, with the age group of 55 years old and over having the highest number of recipients (897; 25.5%), followed by the groups of 30-39 years (868; 24.7%) and 40-49 years (696; 19.8%).

2. Civil Service Retirement System Scheme

At the end of 2020, the number of pensioners of the Civil Service Retirement System Scheme stood at 13.144 thousand (up by 329 persons over 2019). The majority (70.9%) were recipients of disability and old-age pensions.
