[Note: Regarding the monthly dissemination of data for the reference year 2024, DREM has maintained the model from the previous year, reporting an aggregate that includes hotels, rural tourism, and all local accommodation, regardless of the number of beds. In contrast, Statistics Portugal (INE), in its publication, excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. Consequently, this report, the "Em Foco" publication, and the tables published by DREM, mention a total number of guests and overnight stays greater than that reported by INE. For variables such as occupancy rates, rooms, revenue, and personnel costs, the values are consistent with those of INE, as the data collection excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds.]

In November 2024

Local accommodation segment stood out within the Region's tourist accommodation sector, showing a year-over-year growth of 30.1%

In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), tourist accommodation recorded the arrival of 164.6 thousand guests in November, which generated 892.5 thousand overnight stays, reflecting year-on-year increases of 11.5% and 12.3%, respectively. The hotel sector accounted for 71.6% of overnight stays (639.2 thousand), noting a year-on-year increase of 7.0%, while local accommodation (26.1% of the total) and rural tourism (2.3% of the total) saw increases of 30.1% and 8.4%, respectively.

For comparability with the data published by INE, local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds must be excluded. According to this logic of result calculation, overnight stays in tourist accommodation recorded a year-on-year increase of 8.2%, slightly below the national rate of 9.8%.

The net bed occupancy rate for tourist accommodation in November 2024 was 63.5%, a rise of +2.6 pp compared to the same month of the previous year. Meanwhile, the room occupancy rate reached 73.1% (71.2% in November 2023).

In November 2024, the average length of stay across all tourist accommodation increased compared to the same month last year (4.71 nights), standing at 4.73 nights. The highest figures continued to be seen in hotels (4.80 nights) and local accommodation (4.67 nights), followed by rural tourism (3.53 nights).

The total of incoming guests, for the period from January to November 2024 (2,078.7 thousand; +6.2% than in the same period of 2023), also reflects growth, as well as overnight stays, which approached 11 million (+6.8% than in the same period of 2023).

The ten main source markets accounted for 81.5% of total overnight stays recorded in November 2024. Germany stood out with the highest share and a positive year-on-year change (23.1% of the total; +7.7% compared to November 2023), while the United Kingdom (18.7% of the total ) saw a decline of 2.3% compared to November 2023. The Portuguese market ranked third (16.6% of total overnight stays), with 55.3% year-on-year growth. In the fourth position, based on its share of total overnight stays was the Polish market (7,0% of the total; +35,4% towards November 2023), followed by the Netherlands (3.5%; +31.4%) and France (3.4%; +3.2%).

Year-to-date (January to November 2024), the top two source markets displayed divergent trends, with Germany showing a pronounced increase of 5.7% in overnight stays, while the United Kingdom experienced a slight decline of 0.7%. The Portuguese resident market, the third largest, recorded an increase of 2.3% in the same period.

Total revenue and revenue from accommodation in November 2024 experienced year-over-year increases of 26.3% and 28.8%, respectively, amounting to 55.3 million euros and 38.9 million euros. Nationally, the year-over-year changes were similar, with an increase of 16.7% for both total revenue and revenue from accommodation. Cumulatively, the Region saw changes of +14.9% in total revenue and +15.7% in revenue from accommodation.

In November 2024, the average revenue per available room (RevPAR) in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) was approximately 71.97 euros, a +23.3% increase compared to the same month in the previous year. The average daily rate (ADR) in tourist accommodation rose from 81.95 euros in November 2023 to 98.50 euros in November 2024 (+20.2% year-over-year).

From January to November 2024, the RevPAR for all tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) was 84.40 euros, up by 12.9% compared to the same period of the previous year, and 90.93 euros in the hotel sector (+14.2%). In terms of ADR, the values were higher, totalling 109.15 euros for tourist accommodation (+13.0% year-over-year) and 113.14 euros for hotels (+13.9%).
