[Note: Regarding the monthly dissemination of data for the reference year 2024, DREM maintains the same model as the previous year, reporting an aggregate that includes hotels, rural tourism, and all local accommodation, regardless of the number of beds. Conversely, Statistics Portugal (INE), in its publication, excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. Therefore, in this report, in the "Em Foco" publication, and the tables published by DREM, a total number greater than that of the INE is mentioned concerning guests and overnight stays. However, for the variables occupancy rates, rooms, revenue, and personnel costs, the values are consistent with those of the INE, as their data collection also excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds.]
In 2024
Total revenue in the Region's tourist accommodation sector increased by 15.3%
The tourist accommodation, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, recorded the entry of 146.3 thousand guests, generating 790.2 thousand overnight stays, reflecting year-on-year increases of 9.0% and 12.8%, respectively. The hotel segment concentrated 69.8% of overnight stays (551.3 thousand), observing an increase of 8.8% year-on-year, while local accommodation (28.1% of the total) and rural tourism (2.1% of the total) grew by 25.1% and 2.9%, respectively.
To ensure comparability with INE data, it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds, and according to this criterion, overnight stays in tourist accommodation recorded a year-on-year increase of 8.8%, a growth rate higher than the national average (+2.9%).
The net bed occupancy rate of tourist accommodation for the reference month was 54.0%, a value higher (+3.5 p.p.) than that observed in the same month of the previous year. In turn, the room occupancy rate reached 61.3% (compared to 59.9% in December 2023).
In December 2024, the average length of stay in tourist accommodation increased compared to the same month of the previous year (4.65 nights), reaching 4.82 nights. The highest values continue to be observed in hotels (4.86 nights) and local accommodation (4.84 nights), followed by rural tourism (3.71 nights).
For the full year of 2024, the number of guests (2 225.8 thousand; +6.5% compared to the same period in 2023) also showed growth, as did overnight stays, which exceeded 11.7 million (+7.1% compared to the same period in 2023). The net bed occupancy rate reached 66.8% in 2024 (+1.3 pp compared to 2023), while the room occupancy rate stood at 75.9%, the same as in 2023.
It is noteworthy that the top 10 source markets represented 82.6% of the total overnight stays recorded in December 2024. Germany led with 21.6% of total overnight stays and a year-on-year increase of 10.5%, followed by the United Kingdom (18.8% of the total) which recorded an increase of 2.1% compared to December 2023. The Portuguese market ranked third (18.3% of the total), with a year-on-year growth of 35.3%. In fourth place, considering the share of total overnight stays, is the Polish market (7.9% of the total; +33.0% compared to December 2023), ahead of France (3.4%; +14.5%) and the Netherlands (3.0%; +20.6%).
In 2024, the two main source markets showed opposite trends in overnight stays compared to 2023. The German market showed the most significant increase, of 6.0%, while the British market recorded a slight decrease of 0.7%. The Portuguese resident market, the third main market, observed a positive change of 4.1% in the same period.
Total revenue and revenue from accommodation, in December 2024, showed year-on-year growth of 22.6% and 25.3%, respectively, reaching 55.9 million euros and 38.5 million euros, respectively. In the country, in the month in question, year-on-year changes were also positive, with total revenue increasing by 9.2% and room revenue by 9.3%. In cumulative terms, the changes in the Region were 15.3% and 16.3%, respectively, totalling 756.7 million euros in total revenue and 538.0 million euros in room revenue.
In December 2024, the average revenue per available room (RevPAR) in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation below 10 beds) was around 70.13 euros, +21.3% compared to the same month of the previous year. In turn, the average daily rate (ADR) in tourist accommodation increased from 96.56 euros in December 2023 to 114.50 euros in December 2024 (+18.6% year-on-year change).
For the entire year, a RevPAR of 83.13 euros was recorded in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation below 10 beds), representing an increase of 13.3% compared to the same period. In the hotel sector, RevPAR was 89.65 euros (+14.7%). As for ADR, the values were higher, totalling 109.47 euros in tourist accommodation (+13.3% year-on-year) and 113.50 euros in hotels (+14.2%).
Number of rounds played on the Region's golf courses increased by 5.2% in 2024
The Golf Course Survey reveals that, in 2024, 78 983 rounds were played on the three golf courses in the ARM (+5.2% compared to the same period). This activity generated around 4.0 million euros in revenue (+5.6% compared to the previous year). It is noteworthy that 74.6% of the rounds were played by non-members, mostly from the Nordic countries, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Of the total rounds played, 59.4% were sold by hotels and similar establishments, 27.6% by the golf courses themselves, and the remaining 13.0% were transacted by tour operators.

According to data provided by the Ports Administration of the ARM, in 2024, 316 cruise ships docked in the ports of the Region, transporting a total of 716 806 transit passengers, representing an increase of 16.4% compared to the same period.
