[Note: Regarding the monthly dissemination of data for the reference year 2025, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) is aligned with Statistics Portugal (INE) in the simultaneous release of the full set of variables concerning tourist accommodation, now carried out at the end of month n+1. While, for 2024, such dissemination already occurred within this timeframe for guests and overnight stays, the publication of results for occupancy rates, and revenue indicators was only available 45 days after the reference period. From 2025 onwards, a single release moment per month is in place, with the data being preliminary in nature. Moreover, DREM continues to publish an aggregate comprising hotels, rural tourism and all local accommodation, regardless of bed capacity. INE, by contrast, excludes local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. Consequently, in this release, in Em Foco, and in the statistical tables published by DREM, the overall totals of guests and overnight stays are higher than those of INE. However, regarding occupancy rates, rooms, revenues and staff costs, the figures are identical to those of INE, as their compilation excludes local accommodation establishments with fewer than 10 beds.]

Overnight stays and revenue in tourist accommodation in the Region reached record highs
In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), the tourist accommodation recorded 237.8 thousand guests in August 2025, generating 1 337.3 thousand overnight stays, corresponding to year-on-year increases of 6.7% and 8.6%, respectively. Hotels accounted for 66.0% of overnight stays (883.3 thousand), an increase of 3.6% compared with August 2024. Local accommodation represented 31.7% of the total (+20.8%) and rural tourism accounted for 2.3% (+9.1%).
For comparability with Statistics Portugal data, local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds must be excluded. Under this methodological approach, overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Region increased by 3.7% compared with August 2024, a higher growth rate than that observed at the national level (+1.1%).
In August, only Centro recorded a decline in overnight stays compared with the same month of the previous year (-3.0%), possibly due to the impact of wildfires in that area. The remaining regions showed growth, with the ARM (+3.7%) and Peninsula de Setúbal (+3.3%) recording the most significant increases. Oeste e Vale do Tejo and Algarve reported the least pronounced growth (+0.5% in both).
The net bed occupancy rate in tourist accommodation in the Region stood at 76.7%, 1.4 percentage points (pp) above that observed in the same month of 2024 (75.2%). The room occupancy rate reached 85.3% (84.4% in August 2024).
In August 2025, the average length of stay in tourist accommodation was 4.98 nights (4.91 nights in August 2024). The highest values continued to be observed in hotels (5.08 nights) and local accommodation (4.89 nights), followed by rural tourism, with the lowest average stay (3.74 nights).
Between January and August 2025, the total number of guests in tourist accommodation in the Region amounted to 1 645.2 thousand, representing a 9.3% increase compared with the same period in 2024. Overnight stays also rose by 8.8%, surpassing 8.6 million.
The ten main source markets accounted for 85.0% of total overnight stays in August 2025. Portugal ranked first with 21.7% of the total, increasing by 50.4% compared with August 2024, thereby surpassing Germany (15.5%; -1.3%) and the United Kingdom (13.7%; -6.9%) for the third time. France ranked fourth (10.5%; +8.2%), followed by Poland (6.5%; +18.3%).
Cumulatively, from January to August 2025, the two main international source markets evolved in opposite directions: the German market increased by 0.3%, while the British market fell by 1.5%. Conversely, the domestic market (residents in Portugal), the second largest in this period, recorded the most significant year-on-year growth, rising by 40.6%.
In August 2025, total revenue and revenue from accommodation increased by 13.1% and 13.8%, respectively, amounting to 97.9 million euros and 72.9 million euros. At the national level, in the same month, total revenue grew by 6.5% and revenue from accommodation rose by 5.5%.
Cumulatively, between January and August 2025, revenue in the Region grew by 19.0% and 20.4%, totalling 598.7 million euros (total revenue) and 433.5 million euros (accommodation revenue).
In August 2025, the revenue per available room (RevPAR) in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) stood at 127.14 euros, an increase of 10.4% compared with August 2024. The average daily rate (ADR) rose from 136.38 euros in August 2024 to 148.97 euros in August 2025 (+9.2%).
Between January and August 2025, RevPAR in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds) reached 99.28 euros, representing an 18.2% increase compared with the same period of 2024. In the hotel sector, RevPAR stood at 106.55 euros (+18.9%). ADR values were higher, reaching 125.69 euros in overall tourist accommodation (+15.1% year-on-year) and 129.77 euros in hotels (+15.3%).
