In the 1st quarter of 2025
Madeira Wine Sales decreased by 7.3% in value and 18.1% in volume
According to data provided by IVBAM – Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, IP-RAM, the sales of “Madeira” wine did not exceed 646.5 thousand litres in the 1st quarter of 2025, generating first-sale revenue of 4.4 million euros. Compared with the same period of the previous year, these figures represent decreases of 18.1% in volume and 7.3% in value.
During the reference quarter, sales within the national market amounted to 105.3 thousand litres, with revenue close to 1.0 million euros, of which 84.7 thousand litres and 841.6 thousand euros corresponded to sales within the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Thus, when compared with the 1st quarter of 2024, sales in the national market showed negative trends both in terms of volume (-29.3%) and value (-13.8%).
Exports to European Union (EU) countries amounted to approximately 345.7 thousand litres, yielding revenue of 1.7 million euros. These figures correspond to year-on-year decreases of 9.9% in volume and 3.7% in value. In turn, exports to non-EU countries (Third Countries) approached 195.5 thousand litres, generating revenue of 1.7 million euros, which represents year-on-year changes of -23.7% in volume and -6.6% in value.
Among EU countries, sales to the Belgian market – the third most important in the EU – recorded a significant increase, with rises of 129.3% in volume and 28.4% in value. In Germany, the second most relevant EU market, positive changes were also observed, with increases of 11.6% in volume and 3.8% in value. In France, the main EU market for “Madeira” wine, the volume sold declined by 17.6%, although there was a slight increase in value (+0.2%).
As for non-EU markets, Japan was the main destination, with year-on-year increases of 8.8% in volume and 14.0% in value. By contrast, exports to the United States experienced a sharp decline in volume (-33.2%), although this was offset by a modest increase in value (+0.8%). In another key extra-EU market – the United Kingdom – the trend was also negative in volume (-41.3%), but again slightly positive in value (+2.9%).
It is also worth noting that 81.8% of the total wine sold was bottled wine, with an average sale price of 7.76 euros per litre (7.35 euros/litre in Q1 2024). The remaining wine was sold in bulk at an average price of 2.77 euros per litre (2.80 euros/litre in the same period of the previous year).

In 2024, the value of sales of wines with DO “Madeirense”, IG “Terras Madeirenses” and spirituous beverages decreased
Regarding the bottling of wine with Denominação de Origem (DO) “Madeirense” and with Indicação Geográfica (IG) “Terras Madeirenses”, decreases of 7.7% and 13.2% in volume were recorded, respectively, compared with 2023, amounting to 195.3 thousand litres and 15.1 thousand litres.
In 2024, the sales of wine with DO “Madeirense” (excluding sparkling wine) were approximately 131.7 thousand litres, corresponding to a value of 1.264 million euros. These figures reflect year-on-year decreases of 11.5% in volume and 14.1% in value. Sales of wine with IG “Terras Madeirenses” totalled around 12.2 thousand litres, generating revenue of 83.2 thousand euros, which represents decreases of 8.8% in volume and 7.4% in value.
The regional market accounted for 80.0% of the total volume and 74.4% of the total value of first-sale transactions for these wines.
In terms of sales of DO “Madeirense” wine, white wines were the most sold (43.5% in volume and 53.7% in value), followed by rosé wines (36.8% in volume and 22.1% in value), and red wines (19.8% in volume and 24.2% in value). Regarding wines with IG “Terras Madeirenses”, white wines also represented the largest share, though by a small margin, accounting for 50.9% in both volume and value, followed by red wines (49.1% in both indicators).
