In the 1st quarter of 2026

Commercialisation of Madeira Wine increased in value and volume

According to data provided by IVBAM – Instituto do Vinho, do Bordado e do Artesanato da Madeira, IP-RAM, the commercialisation of Madeira Wine exceeded 658.2 thousand litres in the 1st quarter of 2026, generating first-sale revenues of 4.5 million euros. Compared to the same period of the previous year, increases of 1.8% in volume and 1.9% in value were recorded.

In the reference quarter, commercialisation in the Portuguese market reached 165.8 thousand litres and yielded a value of approximately 1.5 million euros, of which 141.4 thousand litres and 1.2 million euros relate to sales made in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Thus, compared to the 1st quarter of 2025, sales in the national territory showed a positive trend, both in volume (+57.4%) and in value (+47.4%).

Exports to European Union countries stood at around 294.8 thousand litres, generating a value of 1.5 million euros, representing a reduction in volume and value of 14.7% and 13.0%, respectively. In turn, exports to third countries approached 197.7 thousand litres, generating revenues of 1.6 million euros, reflecting year-on-year changes of +1.1% in volume and -10.3% in value.

Within European Union (EU) countries, the increase in sales to the German market — the second most important EU market — stands out, with positive changes of 18.7% and 25.1% in volume and value, respectively. In the Belgian market, changes were negative in both volume and value, with decreases of 68.2% and 25.6%, respectively. In the most important EU market, France, the change in volume was negative (-18.0%), with an even more pronounced decline in value (-27.1%).

In the non-EU market, Japan was the country to which the largest volume of Madeira Wine was exported; however, year-on-year, a decline was recorded in both volume(-33.5%) and value (-37.9%). On the positive side, China (+592.2% in volume and +661.9% in value), Switzerland (+33.4% in volume and +35.3% in value) and Canada (+25.0% in volume and +11.9% in value) recorded significant positive changes in both volume and value. Regarding exports to the United States, the trend was also one of reduction, albeit less pronounced, with a decrease of 23.5% in volume and 16.3% in value. Another important non-EU market — the United Kingdom — also showed a negative performance in both volume (-19.3%) and value (-50.2%).

It should finally be noted that, of the total commercialised, 84.0% corresponded to bottled wine, sold at an average price of 7.64 euros /litre (7.76 euros /litre in the 1st quarter of 2025). The remaining wine was sold in bulk at an average price of 2.77 euros/litre, the same value as in the same period of the previous year.
