In the second quarter of 2024
Unemployment rate in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 5.2%
The results of the Labour Force Survey for the second quarter of 2024 indicate an estimated unemployment rate of 5.2% in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), which is 0.7 percentage points (pp) lower than the previous quarter and 1.2 pp lower than the same quarter of the previous year.
The estimated number of unemployed persons was 7.0 thousand, a decrease of 16.1% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and 13.5% compared to the previous quarter.
The employed population was 126.7 thousand persons, representing a 4.2% increase year-on-year (+5.1 thousand persons) and a 0.6% decrease compared to the previous quarter (-0.7 thousand persons). Among the employed population, 4.0 thousand were in part-time underemployment, 5.5 thousand had secondary jobs, and 18.9 thousand worked from home (17.1% of employed women and 12.6% of employed men).
The activity rate for persons of working age (16 to 89 years old) in the second quarter of 2024 was estimated at 60.5%, which is 1.0 pp higher than the same quarter of the previous year but 1.0 pp lower than the previous quarter. The activity rate for women was 56.8%, 8.0 pp lower than that for men (64.8%).
In Portugal, the unemployment rate for the analysed quarter was 6.1%, showing a decrease of 0.7 pp compared to the previous quarter and remaining the same as the rate for the same quarter of the previous year.
For the reference quarter, the regions with the highest unemployment rates were Península de Setúbal at 8.0%, Grande Lisboa at 6.4%, and Norte at 6.3%. Conversely, the Algarve region recorded the lowest rate at 5.0%, followed by the Centro, Alentejo, and the ARM, all with an unemployment rate of 5.2%. The Autonomous Region of the Azores (ARA) had an unemployment rate of 5.5%, while the Oeste and Vale do Tejo region had a rate of 5.9%.
The unemployment rate decreased quarterly in all regions of the country except for Península de Setúbal, which maintained the rate of the previous quarter (8.0%). The largest quarterly changes were seen in the Algarve region, with a decrease of 2.8 pp, followed by the Centro region with a decrease of 1.3 pp, and Oeste and Vale do Tejo and the ARA regions, both with decreases of 1.2 pp. The Alentejo region saw a quarterly decrease of 1.0 pp, the Autonomous Region of Madeira of 0.7 pp, Norte of 0.5 pp, and Grande Lisboa of 0.2 pp.
Year-on-year, the Autonomous Regions registered the largest decreases, both decreasing by 1.2 pp compared to the second quarter of 2023. Year-on-year decreases were also seen in the Grande Lisboa region (-0.5 pp), Norte, and Algarve, both with a reduction of 0.1 pp. In the remaining NUTS II regions, the unemployment rate rose, with the Oeste and Vale do Tejo regions recording the largest increase (+0.6 pp), followed by the Península de Setúbal and Alentejo regions, both with a growth of 0.5 pp. The Centro region recorded the smallest year-on-year increase, at 0.4 pp.
