In the 3rd quarter of 2023

Non-performing loans and outstanding loans to non-financial corporations and households decreased on a quarterly and year-on-year basis

In the 3rd quarter of 2023, according to data provided by the Bank of Portugal, the balance of loans granted to non-financial corporations (NFCs) amounted to 1.9 billion euros, a decrease of 115.9 million euros (-5.8%) compared to the end of September 2022 and a decrease of 90.9 million euros (-4.6%) compared to June 2023.

The ratio of overdue credit for these types of corporations decreased by 1.0 percentage points (pp) compared to June 2023, reaching 1.2% at the end of the reference period. When compared to the same quarter last year, there was a reduction of 1.3 percentage points (pp). Nationally, this indicator remained unchanged compared to the previous quarter but decreased by 0.2 pp on a year-on-year basis, not exceeding 2.1% at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2023.

The amount of non-performing loans within non-financial corporations headquartered in the Region was 22.5 million euros during the reference period, which is a decrease of 21.9 million euros compared to June of the current year and a drop of 27.5 million euros compared to September of the previous year.

The percentage of debtors in the NFC sector with overdue loans at the end of September 2023 was 13.2%, slightly above the national average (12.9% during the same period). Compared to September 2022, this indicator declined by 1.6 pp in the region.

In the sector of households and Non-Profit Institutions Serving Families (NPISH), there was a year-on-year reduction of 156.3 million euros in the balance of loans granted, amounting to 2.9 billion euros at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2023. When comparing the balance with the previous quarter, there was also a decrease of approximately 157.1 million euros. Upon detailed analysis, it is observed that 75.8% of that balance pertained to the housing segment, and the remaining 24.2% to consumption and other purposes.

Regarding overdue loans in the housing segment, they did not exceed 7.3 million euros, representing a ratio of overdue loans of 0.3%. Between September 2022 and September 2023, the ratio of overdue housing loans declined by 0.1 pp in the region. In the consumption and other purposes segment, the overdue credit ratio was 2.7%, equal to the national value. In the combined analysis of both segments, this indicator was 0.9% in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) and 0.8% in Portugal.

The number of debtors in the household and NPISH institutional sector decreased compared to the same quarter last year to 100.0 thousand (-1.1 thousand), with approximately 43.1 thousand debtors with housing loans (-1.3 thousand debtors) and 83.9 thousand with loans for consumption and other purposes (-0.8 thousand).
