In the 3rd quarter of 2024

Ratios of non-performing loans decreased year-on-year in non-financial corporations and in households

According to data made available by the Bank of Portugal, at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2024, the balance of the volume of loans granted to non-financial corporations (NFCs) was 1.8 billion euros, representing a 125.1 million euros (-6, 6%) drop over the end of September 2023 and 84.5 million (-4.6%) over June 2024.

The ratio of non-performing loans for NFCs decreased by 0.4 percentage points (pp) compared to September 2023, remaining at 0.8%, at the end of the reference period, and compared to the end of the previous quarter, the reduction was 0.1 pp. At the national level, this indicator increased by 0.1 pp compared to the end of June 2024, remaining in annual terms, unchanged year-to-year at 2.1%, at the end of September 2024. The amount of non-performing loans within the scope of non-financial corporations, with headquarters in the Region, was, in the period under review, at 14.8 million euros (-2.1 million euros compared to last June and -7.3 million euros compared to September of the previous year).

At the end of September 2024, the number of debtors in the non-financial sector was 5.1 thousand, 4.1% higher than the same period of the previous year.

The percentage of debtors in the non-financial corporations, at the end of September 2024, was 13.7%, below the national average (14.7% in the same period). Compared to September 2023, this indicator increased by 0.1 pp in the Region (-0.2 pp compared to June 2024).

In the household sector and Non-Profit Institutions Serving Households (NPISH), there was an increase of 85.3 million euros year-on-year (+2.9%) in the balance of loans granted, amounting to 3.0 billion euros, at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2024. Compared to the balance with that of the previous quarter, an increase of around 45.0 million euros (+1.5%) is observed. 74.6% of that balance referred to the housing segment and the remaining 25.4% to consumption and other purposes.

Regarding non-performing housing loans, they did not exceed 5.7 million euros, representing a non-performing loan ratio of 0.3%, the same value as in the country. For consumption and other purposes, this rate was 2.6% (2.7% in the country).

The number of debtors in the household and NPISH sectors grew compared to the same quarter of the previous year to 102.7 thousand (2.1%), of which 42.7 thousand were debtors with housing loans (-1.6%) and 87.3 thousand with loans for consumption and other purposes (+3.2%).

The percentage of debtors (households and NPISH) with non-performing loans in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was, at the end of September 2024, 6.1% in the ARM and 7.5% in Portugal. Compared to a year earlier, these percentages increased by 0.2 pp in the Region and rose 0.5 pp in the country.
