In 2020
Positive net migration was insufficient to increase the resident population of the Autonomous Region of Madeira
According to the Resident Population Estimates, at December 31st 2020, 253,923 persons were residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which represents a 0.1% decline when compared to the equivalent date of 2019. Of that total, 118,524 were men and 135,399 women.
After a reverse of successive population decreases in 2019, with the population increasing in that year, in 2020 the Region again recorded a population decrease, -331 people compared to 2019, corresponding to a negative crude rate of increase of ‑1.3‰ (+1.2‰ in 2019).
The positive net migration of 2020 (+522) was not enough to increase the Region’s population since the natural decrease (from -788 persons in 2019 to -853 in 2020) overlapped the positive migration balance.
The municipality of Santa Cruz (8.1‰) was the only in which the crude rate of population change was positive. The lowest values were registered in the municipalities of Porto Moniz (-12.9‰), Santana (-9.4‰) e Ribera Brava (-6.4‰).

In 2020, the population density of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 316.8 inhabitants per km2. Funchal had the highest value (1,362.3 pop/km2) and Porto Moniz the lowest (27.9 pop/km2).
In the reference year, the proportion of youth population (15 years old and under) represented 12.8% of the total population (13.1% in 2019), while the proportion of the population aged 65 and over rose to 17.4% (17.0% in 2019). Therefore, the ageing ratio reached 136.4, i.e., 136.4 older persons (65 and over) per 100 young persons (129.5 in 2019).
The total fertility rate (average number of children per woman aged between 15 and 49), dropped from 1.15 in 2019 to 1.14 in 2020, remaining very much below the threshold of the replacement level of fertility (2.1 children per woman).
