Natural change remained negative, although more pronounced than in the same period of the previous year

Preliminary data of demographic statistics show that, in the first three quarters of 2021, the Autonomous Region of Madeira registered a natural decrease (-826 persons) since the number of live births in this period (1,261) was lower than the number of deaths (2,087). In the same period of 2020, the natural change had also been negative (-641 persons, the difference between 1,377 live births and 2,018 deaths).

Until September 2021, 4 deaths under the age of 1 year and 3 dead fetuses were reported. Between January and September 2020, the number of deaths under 1 year was slightly higher (5 deaths) and the number of dead fetuses was the same.

In the period of reference, 619 marriages took place in the registry offices of the Region, up by 214 from the same period of 2020, representing an increase of 52.8%.
