Egg production and landed catch increased while poultry meat, livestock slaughterings and agricultural products prices decreased

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira releases today the Agriculture and Fishery Statistics for 2017, which includes the 2016 data on the structure of agricultural holdings and on the Regional Economic Accounts for Agriculture.

The main results are summarised as follows: 

In agriculture:

- According to the Survey on the structure of agricultural holdings/2016, there are 11,628 agricultural holdings in Madeira, with a total of 4,893 hectares (1 hectare = 100 ares = 10,000m2) of Utilised Agricultural Area (UAA). Compared with the Survey on the structure of agricultural holdings/2013, the number of holdings dropped by 3.6%, while the UAA decreased by 7.0%. The average UAA decreased from  4,365 m2 in 2013 to 4,212 m2 in 2016.

- The potato production stood at 30,689 tonnes in 2017, increasing by 17.5% from 2016, remaining as the highest among temporary crops, followed by sweet potato (11,736 tonnes) and sugar cane (10,830 tonnes). Banana (23,187 tonnes, up by 8.8% from 2016) and vitis vinifera grapes (4,516 tonnes, +28.5%) were the most important productions of permanent crops in 2017.

In animal production:

- In aviculture, the egg production in 2017 reached 24.1 million units, increasing by 9.4% from 2016. The production of poultry meat decreased by 5.6%, totaling 3.346,5 tonnes in the year of reference.

- The livestock slaughtering stood at 917.1 tonnes, decreasing by 2.0% from 2016.

In fishery:

- In 2016, the landed catch grew by 38.6% in volume to 7,987 tonnes and increased by 40.2% in value to 21.6 million euros. The catches of tuna and tuna-like species grew (+89.3%) as in the case of black-scabbard fish (+12.8%).

Regional Economic Accounts for Agriculture (REGEAA) and exports:

- The REGEAA data show that agricultural output in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 114.1 million euros in 2016. Between 2015 and 2016 (for 2016 the data is still provisional) agricultural output increased by 5.0% in nominal terms. 86.4% of the total agricultural output came from crop output and 10.0% from animal output.

- The Autonomous Region of Madeira dispatched 18.9 thousand tonnes of banana and 194.0 tonnes of sweet potato in 2017. 22 thousand protea flowers and 15 thousand cymbidium stems were also dispatched in the year of reference.

Agricultural prices:

- In 2017, the agricultural products producer price index dropped by 7.5% over 2016. This decrease was driven by the drop in the price index of potatoes (-17.2%), fresh vegetables (-14.7%) and subtropical fruits (-7.5%). The prices index of agricultural production means increased by 1.2% from 2016, a rise which can be explained by the increase in the price indexes of energy and lubricants (+10,4%) and seeds and planting stock (+10.0%).
