DREM releases 2025 Agriculture and Fisheries Statistics for the Autonomous Region of Madeira

The Regional Statistics Directorate of Madeira (DREM) releases the Agriculture and Fisheries Statistics for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) for the year 2025. In addition to the tables made available on the website, an "Em Foco" publication is also released, including an analysis of the results, from which the following points summarising the sector's developments in the year under review are drawn:

Agriculture: Sweet potato and potato production increased, while banana and vitis vinifera grape production decreased

- Among temporary crops, in 2025, potato remains the crop with the highest production volume, totalling 18 542 tonnes, increasing by 1 189 tonnes over 2024 (+6.9%). Sweet potato emerges as the second most significant production within this group, with 10 843 tonnes, a value 3 140 tonnes higher than that recorded in 2024 (+40.8%). This is followed by sugar cane, with an estimated production of 8 410 tonnes, dropping by 510 tonnes over the previous year, representing a decrease of 5.7%.

Among permanent crops, in 2025, banana and vitis vinifera grape production decreased compared with the previous year, totalling 21 992 and 2 874 tonnes, respectively, corresponding to decreases of 14.4% and 11.1%, respectively.

Bananas marketed in the ARM stood at 20 945 tonnes, declining by 14.4% over 2024. The extra class represented 80.3% of the total processed, a lower proportion than that recorded in the previous year (83.0%). In the case of grapes, according to data from the Instituto do Vinho, do Bordado e do Artesanato da Madeira, I.P. (IVBAM, I.P.), 71.3% of total production corresponded to the Tinta Negra variety, compared with 76.3% in 2024.

In this year, organic farming covered 144 farmers and an agricultural area of 222.7 hectares. In parallel, 38 farmers were in conversion to this production method, involving an area of 31.0 hectares.

Animal production: Egg production increased, while poultry meat and slaughtered livestock decreased

In the industrial poultry sector, egg production totalled 38.7 million units in 2025, representing an increase of 19.5% compared with the previous year. The opposite trend was recorded for poultry meat, the volume of which stood at around 3.4 thousand tonnes, representing a decrease of 2.9% compared with 2024.

Total slaughtered livestock and approved for human consumption stood at 805.4 tonnes (net weight), down by 8.6% over the previous year. This decrease reflects the declines recorded in slaughter of pigs  (−15.0%) and cattle slaughter (−8.4%), with the latter species being the most slaughtered, accounting for 97.8% of the total.

Fisheries: Increase in landed catch and decrease in first sale value

In 2025, the volume of landed catch at the Region's ports increased by 2.3%, with the annual total standing at 3.6 thousand tonnes. In terms of first-sale value, however, there was a decrease of 2.9%, with an annual cumulative value of around 16.2 million euros.

The positive trend observed in the volume of landed catch was mainly due to the increase recorded in catches of tuna and similar species (+39.7%). Conversely, catches of black scabbardfish recorded a decrease of 4.7% compared with the previous year, although decreases were also recorded in the volume of mackerel and blue jack mackerel (−59.4% and −48.1%, respectively), a situation largely determined by a temporary suspension of seine fishing activity targeting small pelagic species.

Black scabbardfish was the most abundant species in 2025, totalling 2,192.4 tonnes (61.0% of total landed catch), followed by tuna and similar species, with 1 237.2 tonnes (34.4%).

In terms of first-sale revenue, tuna and similar species recorded an increase of 33.9% compared with 2024, reaching 4.7 million euros, while black scabbardfish recorded a decrease of 8.8%, standing at 10.4 million euros.

In 2025, the average fish price recorded at first sale (excluding landed catch for self-consumption) decreased by 4.9%, to 4.59 euros (4.83 euros in 2024), reaching, in the case of black scabbardfish, 4.84 euros (5.05 euros in 2024) and, in the case of tuna and similar species, 3.86 euros (4.01 euros in 2024).

In the Region, in 2025, 1 363.3 tonnes of seabream were produced, 0.1% more than in 2024. In turn, sales amounted to around 9.1 million euros, growing by 7.1% compared with the previous year. By market, 86.6% of sales value compared to the national market (mainland Portugal and the Azores), 13.3% to the regional market and only 0.1% to the EU market.

Economic Accounts for Agriculture and exports of agricultural products: Gross Value Added of the agricultural branch grew in 2024

Provisional data from the Regional Economic Accounts for Agriculture (CEAREG) show that, in the ARM, output of the agricultural branch in 2024 stood at 157.7 million euros, growing by 3.2% in nominal terms compared with the previous year.

Intermediate consumption stood at 80.4 million euros in 2024, representing a decrease of 0.7% compared with the previous year.

Gross Value Added (GVA), which corresponds to the difference between agricultural output and intermediate consumption, grew by 7.6% in nominal terms compared with 2023, standing at 77.3 million euros. This increase was due to the decrease in intermediate consumption (−0.7%) and the increase in output (+3.2%).

Gross Fixed Capital Formation, one of the components of Investment, amounted to 7.3 million euros, +2.1% compared with 2023.

In terms of agricultural product exports, the ARM shipped 17.0 thousand tonnes of bananas, 1.4 tonnes of cane honey and approximately 549 proteas.

Agricultural prices: Prices of agricultural goods grew more than those of production inputs

In 2025, the agricultural producer price index for goods recorded an increase of 27.6% compared with 2024, resulting from growth in both plant production (+30.0%) and animal production (+0.6%).

In plant production, notable increases were observed in the price indices for fruit (+20.1%) and vegetables and horticultural products (+12.1%), which include fresh vegetables (+13.1%). Conversely, the table potato index recorded a decrease of 2.0% compared with 2024, following increases in the three preceding years.

With regard to animal production, the 0.6% growth compared with 2024 resulted from the increase observed in the price index for animals (+0.9%).

The price index for current consumption production inputs in agriculture rose by 2.2% in 2025 compared with the previous year, with the largest increases observed in the indices for animal feed (+14.2%), building maintenance (+4.0%) and seeds and plants (+3.6%), and the main decreases recorded in fertilisers and soil improvers (−7.8%) and plant protection products (−4.5%).
