Commercialisation of “Madeira” Wine decreased by 1.7% in volume and increased 12.5% in value, despite the pronounced drop in March in the sales for European markets
According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine stood at 648,213 litres, generating first sale receipts of 3.9 million euros. When compared with the corresponding period of 2019, the quantities sold decreased by 1.7% and sales grew by 12.5% year-on-year.
Compared to the 1st quarter 2019, exports to EU countries dropped by 6.5% in volume and by 5.2% in value, while sales to third countries grew by 8.2% in volume and by 38.3% in first sale receipts. The sales for Mainland Portugal and in the Autonomous Region fo Madeira went up by 3.9% in value and by 15.3% in value.
The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic were also felt in the sales of Madeira Wine, particularly on the EU market. In March, this market fell 63.8% in quantities and 53.0% in value. However, the good performance in some markets outside the EU, particularly in the US and Japan, softened the drop in quantities in terms of the global values of the month (-32.2%) and offset the decrease in value, which in fact grew by 6.1%.
In the first three months of the year, and compared to the same period of 2019, it should be highlighted the growth in sales for China (+517.3% in volume and +1499.8% in value), Belgium (+189.6% in volume and +92.2% in value) and Switzerland (+96.7% in volume and +93.4% in value). Inversely, there were important sales reductions to the Netherlands (-76.7% in quantity and -61.8% in value), United Kingdom (-62.5% in volume and -56.2% in first-sale revenues) and Germany (-6.5% in quantity and -2.8% in value). Exports to France also went down by 5.9% in volume and by 5.5% in receipts.
In terms of first sale receipts the most important markets in this quarter were France and the US, with exports of 555.9 thousand euros and 515.7 thousand euros, respectively. In the case of the European country there was a 5.5% drop year-on-year, while the sales value for the US went up by 26.6%. The decrease in France is explained by the pronounced drop in March (-96.3%), since the cumulative value in February showed a 40.5% increase.

In 2019, the bottling of DO “Madeiran”, GI Wine and other alcoholic beverages produced in Madeira decreased in volume
According to the same source, the production and bottling of spirits produced in Madeira totalled 872.7 thousand litres, down by 1.2% over 2018, generating 4.5 million euros in receipts (+3.2% compared to 2018). The Madeiran Rum accounted for 59.8% of the total volume and liquers for 39.2%.
The commercialization of spirits produced in Madeira topped 994.3 thousand litres in volume and 5.8 million euros in first sale receipts. 87.0% of the sales value was made in the Region. Exports for France of “Madeiran Rum” totalled 244.2 million euros (4.2% of the total).
The bottling of DO (Designation of Origin) Madeiran wine decreased in volume by 20.9%, and by 24.6% in value, standing in 2019 at 79.1 thousand litres and 704.4 thousand euros, respectively. In the case of GI (Geographical Indication) wine, the bottled volume was 20.3 thousand litres (-32.3%), which represented a value of 141.6 thousand litres (-26.0%).
In terms of commercialization of these wines, the regional market was responsible for 82.1% of the first sale receipts and Mainland Portugal for 13.2%. The USA were the main external market (3.1%).
