In November 2024
Number of deaths increased by 7.7% compared to the same month in the previous year, while the number of live births decreased by 24.2%
In November 2024, 196 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure higher than that observed in the same month of 2023 (14 more deaths; +7.7%). From January to November, a total of 2 343 deaths were registered, which is 207 fewer than in the corresponding period of the previous year (-8.1%).
The assessment of "excess mortality," which compares the deaths in the reference month (196 deaths) with the average values for the same month between 2016 and 2019 (207 deaths, on average), indicates a mortality deficit of 5.1%. This reflects the fact that, during those years, the number of deaths was consistently higher than the value recorded in November 2024.
In November 2024, two deaths under 1 year of age were recorded and no stillbirths were reported.
Additionally, in November 2024, there were 138 live births, corresponding to a drop of 24.2% compared to the same month of 2023 (44 fewer live births). The total number of live births recorded in the first eleven months of 2024 (1 621) was 1.0% higher than that recorded in the same period of 2023 (+16 live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 58 persons in November 2024, which is less severe than in the same month of the previous year, in which the natural balance was zero. In the first eleven months of 2024, the cumulative value of the natural balance stood at -722, showing an improvement compared to the same period in 2023 (‑945).
In the eleventh month of 2024, 86 marriages were celebrated, an increase of 21.1% compared to the number of marriages held in November 2023 (+15 marriages). From January to November 2024, a total of 1 129 marriages were celebrated, 89 more (+8.6%) than in the corresponding period of 2023.
