In March 2025
Number of deaths increased compared to the same month in the previous year, while the number of live births decreased
In March 2025, a total of 256 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, a figure higher than that observed in March 2024 (34 more deaths; 15.3%). From January to March, a total of 788 deaths were registered, 107 more than in the corresponding period of the previous year (+15.7%).
The assessment of “excess mortality,” which compares the number of deaths recorded in the reference month (256 deaths) with the average for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (an average of 251 deaths), indicates an excess mortality rate of 2.1%. This reflects the fact that, across those years, the number of deaths was almost consistently lower than that recorded in March 2025.
In March 2025, no deaths under 1 year of age nor stillbirths were recorded.
Also in March 2025, a total of 131 live births were registered, corresponding to a decrease of 8.4% compared to the same month in 2024 (12 fewer births). The total number of live births recorded in the first three months of 2025 stood at 386, which is 9.0% lower than that recorded in the same period of the previous year (-38 live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 125 persons in March 2025, a more pronounced decline than in the same month of the previous year, when the balance was -79. In the first three months of 2025, the cumulative natural balance stood at -402, showing a deterioration compared to that observed in the same period of 2024 (-257).
In the third month of 2025, 69 marriages were celebrated, a value equal to the number of marriages held in March 2024. From January to March 2025, a total of 201 marriages were celebrated, 14 more (+7.5%) than in the corresponding period of 2024.
