Number of divorces decreased compared to the previous year
Provisional data on dissolved marriages by divorce indicate that in 2024, 454 divorces were decreed for couples whose family residence was in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, down by 66 over 2023. This corresponds to a crude divorce rate of 1.8‰ (compared to 2.0‰ in 2023).
Among the municipalities, Porto Moniz recorded the lowest divorce rate in the Region (0.8‰), while Ribeira Brava had the highest number of divorces per thousand inhabitants (2.3‰).
The vast majority of divorces were between opposite-sex couples. There were 4 divorces between male same-sex couples and 4 between female same-sex couples.
In 2024, 71.6% of the decreed divorces were "by mutual consent," while the remaining 28.4% resulted from divorces declared “without the consent of one of the spouses”.
The average age at the time of divorce was 48.9 years for men and 46.2 years for women (compared to 49.0 years and 46.6 years in 2023, respectively).
Regarding the length of the marriage, 67.8% of the divorces involved unions that had lasted 10 or more years (308 divorces), and 32.2% stemmed from marriages lasting less than 10 years (146 divorces). It is worth noting that 41.4% of the divorces decreed were from marriages lasting 20 years or more (188 divorces), with a particular focus on the 20-29 years group (109 divorces; 24.0%). Additionally, 17.4% of divorces resulted from marriages lasting 30 years or more (79 divorces).
