In September 2025, 216 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure lower than that observed in September 2024 (4 fewer deaths; -1.8%). The assessment of “excess mortality”, which compares the number of deaths in the reference month (216) with the average for the same month in the years 2016 to 2019 (206 deaths on average), indicates an excess of mortality of 4.7%, reflecting the fact that, in most of those years, the number of deaths was lower than that recorded in September 2025.

Also in September 2025, 153 live births were registered, corresponding to a 6.1% decrease compared with September 2024 (10 fewer live births). The total number of live births registered in the first nine months of 2025 (1 244) was 5.0% lower than that observed in the same period of 2024 (66 fewer live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 63 persons in September 2025, more adverse than in the same month of the previous year, when the figure stood at -57. In the first nine months of 2025, the cumulative natural balance amounted to -926, representing a deterioration compared with the same period of 2024 (-651).
