In the 2nd quarter 2021
Commercialisation of “Madeira” Wine increased in quantity and value year-on-year
According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine stood at 669,949 litres, which resulted in first sale receipts of 3.9 million euros. When compared with the corresponding period of 2020, the quantities sold increased by 9.2% and the sales value by 36.1%.
Compared to the same quarter of 2020, exports to European Union countries suffered a 3.0% decrease in volume, but on the other hand, a 10.7% increase in value. Regarding third countries, there were increases both in volume and value of 11.6% and 29.1% respectively. Sales of Madeira wine in Portugal rose both in volume (+156.2%) and value (+330.6%). Sales in the regional market, in turn, grew by 134.2% in volume and by 263.6% in value, which can be explained by an increase in tourist activity compared to the 2nd quarter of 2020, a period of virtual standstill of this activity.
From January to June 2021, the sales volume and receipts also increased by 2.0% and 11.1%, year-on-year. The third countries market also registered increases both in quantities (+14.2%) and in value (+19.0%). However, exports to the European Union countries fell in quantities (-0.8%) but increased in value (+10.0%). On the contrary, the national market registered falls both in quantity and value, of 15.6% and 7.2% respectively.
In the first six months of the year, and compared to the same period in 2020, there were drops in sales to Switzerland (-27.6% in quantity and -20.7% in value), Japan (-20.4% in quantity and -25.5% in value) and to the Chinese market (-14.3% in quantity and -43.7% in value). On the other hand, the Dutch market (+276.8% in quantity and +172.1% in value) and the Canadian market (+185.7% in quantity and +123.7% in value) were the best performers.
It should be noted that, in the national market, the quantity sold increased by 74.0% and the value rose by 170.8%.
Regarding the top two profitable foreign markets – France and the USA – the data show in the first case a year-on-year decrease on first sale receipts of 5.9% and in the second case an increase of 44.1%. The amount of Madeira wine traded on these markets was 1,307 thousand euros in the first case and 1,223 thousand euros in the second. Finally, it should be noted that sales in the regional market fell by 36.1% in volume and by 40.6% in value.
