In the 1st quarter of 2023
“Madeira” Wine sales grew in volume and value year-on-year
According to data provided by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, P.I., the commercialisation of “Madeira” wine reached 715.5 thousand litres in the 1st quarter of 2023, which resulted in a first sale receipt of 5.3 million euros. Compared to the same period of the previous year, there was an increase of 8.1% and 6.4% in volume and value, respectively.
In the quarter in reference, sales in the national territory showed a growth trend compared to the 1st quarter of 2022, both in volume (+59.5%) and value (+57.5%). Thus, sales on the domestic market reached 170.2 thousand litres and yielded approximately 1.4 million euros, of which 122.3 thousand litres and 1.0 million euros are from sales made in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Exports to EU countries were around 329.4 thousand litres, generating sale receipts of 1.5 million euros, which represents year-on-year changes of -1.0% in volume and -5.6% in value, by the same order. In turn, exports to third countries reached 215.9 thousand litres, generating an income of 2.4 million euros, which represents a decrease of -3.0% and -4.8%, respectively.
Within the European Union (EU) countries, the highlight was the increase in sales to France (+14.8% in quantity and +14.0% in value) and to Germany (+15.8%; +17.3%). On the negative side, the Belgium market showed a sales reduction, with changes of -55.8% and -26.7% in volume and value, respectively.
In extra-EU markets, the United States (+34.9% in volume and +0.7% in value) and the United Kingdom (+23.6%; +29.8%) were the most important markets, while, on the contrary Japan (-18.4%; -6.1%) and Switzerland (-55.2%; -81.6. %) had a negative performance.
Of the total traded, 74.8% corresponded to bottled wine, sold on average at 9.01 euros/litre (9.33 euros/litre in the first quarter of 2022). The remaining wine was sold in bulk at an average price of 2.70 euros/litre (the same value as in the same period last year).
