[On the Madeira-Porto Santo line, the year-on-year change in the 4th quarter of 2023 for the number of passengers has been revised from 13.5% to 14.0%, as well as from +30.7% to 31.2%, in the change compared to the same quarter of 2019. The number of passengers in 2023 was corrected from 407.9 thousand to 408.3 thousand, with the respective change compared to the previous year being corrected from 20.1% to 20.2% (compared to 2019, the change of +12.4% was corrected to +12.5%). DREM releases transport statistics for 2023
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today data for the 4th quarter of 2023 regarding the different modes of transport, thereby encompassing the entirety of the year 2023.
Land transport – Increases in all indicators compared to 2022
According to the data collected by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in the 4th quarter of 2023, public passenger transport by bus recorded a total of 6.8 million users, an increase of 4.9% year-on-year. In urban lines, 4.4 million passengers were transported, +7.9% compared to the same period in 2022. In interurban lines, 2.4 million passengers were carried by bus, minus 0.3% vis-a-vis the same period last year. In 2023, 26.8 million passengers were transported in urban lines (+9.0% compared to 2022; +6,5% compared to 2019) with 17.2 million passengers in urban lines (+11.3% compared to 2022) and 9.6 million passengers in intercity lines (+5.2% towards 2022).
In 2023, about 1,353.1 thousand tickets were sold by cableways installed in the Region (+26.1% than in 2022; +43.6% compared to 2019), 93.5% were for adults, 4.4% for children and the remaining 2.1% for other users (e.g. farmers, residents, students, etc.). For the same period, total revenue stood at approximately 16.8 million euros, representing a 31.5% growth (+58.6% compared to 2019). It should be noted that in the 4th quarter of 2023, there were slighter year-on-year increases in tickets sold (+5.4%) and revenue (+14.6%), but compared to the same period in 2019, the increases were even higher, of +36.3% and +52.9% by the same order.
Conversely, the Registers of the Region recorded, in the 4th quarter of 2023, the transfer of ownership of 3,491 used vehicles, 88.1% of which were passenger cars and 11.0% were cargo vehicles. There were also 30 heavy vehicles registered, representing 0.9% of the total. Compared to the 4th quarter of 2022, the number of registrations grew by 141, meaning a year-on-year increase of 4.2% (+0.5% compared to the same period in 2019). In 2023, 14,433 used vehicles changed ownership, representing a 3.1% growth when compared to 2022 and +5.9% towards 2019.
According to the information collected by ACAP - Associação Automóvel de Portugal - from the Institute of Records and Notary, in 2023, a total of 6,769 new vehicles were purchased by residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which increased 26.2% towards 2022 (+48.2% compared to 2019). In the 4th quarter of 2023, 1,670 new vehicles were acquired, which compared to the same period in 2022, represented an increase of 431 (+34.8%). It is important to note that this variable corresponds to vehicle acquisitions made by entities residing in the ARM, including those made by car rental companies, and not to sales by automobile dealers operating in the ARM.
Provisional data provided by the Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) show that, in 2023, 3,656 road accidents were recorded with police intervention, which means a year-on-year increase of 16.9% (+13.6% compared to 2019). The number of victims was 1,226, up by 142 over 2022 (+1 compared to 2019). Of that number of victims, 1,119 were counted as minor injuries, 94 as serious injuries and 13 as fatalities.
Air transport – Passenger movement at the Autonomous Region of Madeira’s airports grew 18.1% towards 2022
The airports of Madeira e Porto Santo recorded a movement of approximately 1,130.2 thousand passengers, in the 4th quarter of 2023, representing a positive year-on-year change of 9.5% (+50.2% compared to the same period in 2019). This growth was observed in both the ARM airports, with Madeira and Porto Santo experiencing year-on-year changes of +9.4% and +13.1%, respectively (+48.8% and +95.6% compared to 2019, respectively). When compared to the same period of 2019, the values were already exceeded by 48.8% in Madeira and 95.6% in Porto Santo. In 2023, the movement of passengers at the Autonomous Region of Madeira airports was approximately 4.8 million, a year-on-year increase of 18.1% and 43.6% compared to the figures recorded in 2022 and 2019.
In 2023, the occupancy of the aircraft movements at the ARM airports averaged 84.4%, with Madeira Airport reaching 85.0% and Porto Santo at 74.5%. Last year, the occupancy rate was lower, at 80.0%, 80.7%, and 70.3%, respectively.
Regarding air cargo, in the 4th quarter, the airports of Madeira and Porto Santo had an increase of 11.3% (+1.0% when compared to the same period in 2019). In both airports unloaded goods increased by 10.4% year-on-year (+20.6% compared to the 4th quarter of 2019), as well as the loaded goods increased by 14.8% (-36.4% compared to the same period in 2019). In cumulative terms, the same behaviour was observed in both flows compared to 2022 (+6.8% in unloaded goods; -21.6% in loaded goods) and compared to 2019 (+11.6% in unloaded goods; -44.6% in loaded goods).
Maritime transport – Goods movement in ports on the rise
Regarding maritime transport, in 2023, 279 cruise ships were entering the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the majority in the 1st quarter (94) and 4th quarter (111). In the previous year, there were minus 44 cruise ships docked in the ports of Madeira. When compared to the last pre-pandemic year (2019) the number of stopovers went down by 19. Despite this negative trend in the number of stopovers, the number of passengers in transit (615,689) grew significantly (+50.1%; +4.5% than in 2019).
In 2023, the Port of Funchal received 614,731 passengers in transit, the majority Europeans (87.4%). The main nationalities were British (38.9% of the total; +25.4% than in 2019), German (36.1% of the total; -6.5% than in the same period of 2019), Italian (2.8% of the total; -11.3% than in 2019) and French (2.1% of the total; +12.4% than in 2019). It should also be noted that American passengers in transit at the Port of Funchal (11.6% of the total) grew by 34.6% compared to 2019. The nationalities that contributed to this increase were North American (6.9% of the total; +25.1% than in 2019) and the Brazilian (2.4% of the total; +161.0% than in 2019).
Regarding Madeira-Porto Santo line, the number of passengers increased by 14.0% in year-on-year terms in the fourth quarter of 2023, surpassing the figures from the same quarter of 2019 (+31.2%. In cumulative terms, in 2023, the number of transported passengers reached 408.3 thousand, a value exceeding that of the previous year by 20.2% (+12.5% compared to 2019).
The movement of goods in the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, in the quarter in reference, was overall positive (+11.0% compared to the same quarter of 2022; +15.1% towards 2019). This change contributed to the increase observed in the unloading (+11.1%; +16.9% towards 2019), as well as the increase of 10,0% in the loading (+2.5% towards 2019). In 2023 the year-to-date change was equally positive (+7.6%, +17,7% towards 2019). both in cargo (+2.1% compared to 2022 and +4.4% compared to 2019) and in unloading (+8.3% compared to 2022 and +19.5% compared to 2019).
