DREM releases the transport statistics for the first quarter of 2024, and the publication "Transport Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira – 2023

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has released today transport data for the first quarter of 2024, covering various modes of transport. Additionally, the publication "Transport Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira – 2023" is now available.

Land Transport – Increases in public passenger transport by bus

According to data gathered by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira public passenger transport by bus recorded a total of 7.7 million passengers in the first quarter of 2024, reflecting a 13.0% year-on-year increase. Urban lines carried 5.1 million passengers (+17.6% compared to the same period in 2023), while interurban lines transported 2.6 million passengers (+5.1% year-on-year).

From January to March 2024, approximately 305,800 tickets were sold to users of the Region's cableways, a 1.7% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. Of these, 94.7% were for adults, 3.9% for children, and the remaining 1.5% for other types of users (e.g., farmers, residents, students, etc.). Total revenue for this period was approximately 3.9 million euros, representing a slight year-on-year decrease of 0.7%.

Furthermore, the Registers of the Region recorded the transfer of registration for 3,757 used vehicles in the 1st quarter of 2024, with 86.7% being passenger cars and 12.1% cargo vehicles. Additionally, 42 heavy vehicles were registered, accounting for about 1.1% of the total. Compared to the first quarter of 2023, the number of registrations decreased by 26, a 0.7% year-on-year decrease.

According to information collected by ACAP - Associação Automóvel de Portugal from the Institute of Registries and Notary, a total of 1,341 new vehicles were registered by residents in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) in the first quarter of 2024, a decrease of 389 vehicles compared to the same period in 2023. It is noteworthy that this variable corresponds to vehicle acquisitions made by entities residing in the ARM, including those by car rental companies, and not to sales by car dealerships operating in the ARM.

Provisional data provided by the Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) indicate that 840 road accidents involving police intervention were recorded in the first quarter of 2024, a 6.9% decrease compared to the same quarter of the previous year. There were 248 victims, 17 fewer than in the same quarter of 2023, of which 229 were minor injuries, 18 serious injuries, and one fatality.

Acquisition of electric vehicles in the ARM increased by 21.5% in 2023

According to data collected by DREM from ACAP, residents of the ARM acquired 806 fully electric cars in 2023, representing an increase of 28.1% compared to the previous year. Additionally, 1,209 plug-in electric hybrid vehicles powered by diesel or gasoline were purchased (+17.4% compared to 2022). In total, 2,015 electric vehicles were acquired, representing a 21.5% increase compared to 2022.

Air Transport – Passenger movement at the ARM airports grew by 2.1%

In the 1st quarter of 2024, the ARM airports recorded passenger movement of approximately 1,070,400, representing a 2.1% year-on-year increase. This growth was observed across both the ARM airports, with Madeira and Porto Santo recording increases of +1.9% and +9.2% respectively, compared to the same quarter of 2023.

During the first three months of 2024, the aircraft occupancy rate at the ARM airports averaged 84.5%, with Madeira Airport achieving 85.0% and Porto Santo 73.1%. In the same period last year, the occupancy rate was lower, at 78.9%, 79.5%, and 64.1%, respectively.

Regarding air cargo, 1.1 thousand tonnes were handled at the ARM airports in the 1st quarter of 2024, representing a 16.7% increase compared to the same quarter of 2023. Across both the ARM airports, unloaded goods increased by 16.1% year-on-year and loaded goods by 29.0%.

Maritime Transport – Goods movement at the ARM ports declined by 1.6%

In the domain of maritime transport, 77 cruise ships docked at the ARM ports in the first quarter of 2024, 17 fewer than in the same period last year. The number of passengers in transit was 222,225, also a decrease of 3.3% compared to the same quarter of 2023.

During the quarter under review, only the Port of Funchal received passengers in transit (222,225, as previously mentioned), the vast majority (96.7%) being Europeans. The predominant nationalities were German (47.3% of the total; -5.5% compared to the first quarter of 2023) and British (42.1%; +9.2%). Notably, passengers in transit coming from the American continent at the Port of Funchal (2.6% of the total) decreased by 51.4% compared to the first quarter of 2023, with the primary contributing nationality being North American (2.0% of the total; -46.3% compared to the first quarter of 2023).

On the Madeira-Porto Santo line, the number of passengers was approximately 38,400, an increase of 18.2% compared to the same period in 2023.

The movement of goods in the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, in this quarter totalled 320,900 tonnes, a 1.6% decrease compared to the same period of the previous year. This decrease was driven by a decline in unloaded goods (-2.8%), whereas loaded goods saw an increase of 8.8%.
