Number of deaths decreased by 4.4% compared to the same month in the previous year, while the number of live births increased by 6.1%

In August 2024, 237 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure lower than that observed in the same month of 2023 (11 fewer deaths; -4.4%). From January to August, a total of 1,730 deaths were registered, which is 159 fewer than in the corresponding period of the previous year (-8.4%).

The assessment of "excess mortality," which compares the deaths in the reference month (237 deaths) with the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (214 deaths on average), indicates an excess mortality of 11.0%. This reflects the fact that, over those years, the number of deaths was consistently lower than the value recorded in August 2024.

In August 2024, 1 death of foetus was reported and there were no deaths under 1 year of age.

Additionally, in August 2024, there were 156 live births, corresponding to a rise of 6.1% compared to the same month of 2023 (9 more live births). The total number of live births recorded in the first eight months of 2024 (1,137) was 1.0% higher than that recorded in the same period of 2023 (11 more live births).

The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 81 persons in August 2024, which is less severe than in the same month of the previous year, when the balance stood at -101. In the first eight months of 2024, the cumulative value of the natural balance was -593, showing an improvement compared to the same period in 2023 (‑763).

In the eighth month of 2024, 137 marriages were celebrated, corresponding to a 29.2% rise compared to the number of marriages held in August 2023 (31 more marriages). From January to August 2024, 753 marriages were celebrated, 65 more (+9.4%) than in the same period the previous year.
