Number of deaths increased by 2.1% compared with the same month of the previous year, while the number of live births declined by 1.3%

In August 2025, 242 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure higher than that observed in August 2024 (an increase of 5 deaths; +2.1%). From January to August, a total of 1 954 deaths were registered, representing 213 more than in the corresponding period of the previous year (+12.2%).

The assessment of “excess mortality”, which compares the number of deaths in the reference month (242) with the average for the same month in the years 2016 to 2019 (214 deaths on average), shows an excess mortality deficit of 13.3%, reflecting the fact that, in those years as a whole, the number of deaths was always lower than the value recorded in August 2025. 

In August 2025, no deaths under 1 year of age nor stillbirths were recorded. 

Also in August 2025, 154 live births were registered, corresponding to a decrease of 1.3% compared with August 2024 (2 fewer live births). The total number of live births registered in the first eight months of 2025 (1 091) was 4.9% lower than that observed in the same period in 2024 (56 fewer live births).

The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 88 persons in August 2025, a more unfavourable figure than that observed in the same month of the previous year, when it stood at -81. In the first eight months of 2025, the cumulative natural balance amounted to -863, representing a deterioration compared with the same period of 2024 (-594).

In the eight months of 2025, 116 marriages were celebrated, corresponding to a decrease of 15.9% compared with August 2024 (22 fewer marriages). From January to August, a total of 785 marriages were registered, 28 more (+3.7%) than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
