In 2022

Mortality Due to Diseases of the Circulatory System and Malignant Tumours Decreased, While Mortality Due to Diseases of the Respiratory System Increased

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released today information on the causes of death (OECD adapted list) for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) for the year 2022, by age group and sex. In the annual comparison of the number of deaths, mortality rates were calculated using the average population estimates based on the final results of the 2021 Census.

In 2022, there were 3,104 deaths among residents in the ARM, which corresponds to an increase of 8.0% compared to 2021 (2,875 deaths), of which 1,454 were male (46.8%) and 1,650 were female (53.2%). Thus, the masculinity ratio at death was 88.1, meaning there were 88.1 male deaths for every 100 female deaths. In Portugal, this ratio was 98.6.

In the year under review, the crude death rate in the ARM was 12.3 deaths per thousand inhabitants (11.9‰ nationally).

Mortality from “Diseases of the circulatory system” was the leading cause of death among residents in the ARM, accounting for 787 deaths (-2.7% compared to 2021), corresponding to a rate of 3.1 deaths per thousand inhabitants (3.2 in 2021).

“Malignant tumours” were the second leading cause of death, with 657 deaths (-2.8% compared to 2021), corresponding to a mortality rate of 2.6 deaths per thousand inhabitants (2.7 in 2021). Within this group, the primary cause of death was “Malignant neoplasm of the trachea, bronchus, and lung” (41.1 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants), followed by “Malignant neoplasm of the colon, rectum, and anus” (36.8).

Deaths caused by “Diseases of the respiratory system” were the third leading cause of death, with 435 deaths (+8.5% compared to 2021), corresponding to a mortality rate of 1.7 deaths per thousand inhabitants (1.6 in 2021).

In accordance with the World Health Organisation’s definitions for the coding of causes of death, implemented by the Directorate-General of Health according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), deaths caused by “Diseases of the respiratory system” do not include COVID-19. In ICD-10, deaths from COVID-19 are classified under special use codes, ranging from U00 to U99. In the ARM, in 2022, there were 255 deaths caused by COVID-19 (126 deaths in 2021), representing an increase of 129 deaths compared to 2021. These deaths accounted for 8.2% of the mortality in 2022, corresponding to a mortality rate of 100.8 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants in the ARM (74.4 in Portugal). The months of the first quarter, as well as April, June, and July, recorded the highest number of deaths, constituting 81.2% of the total.
