In the first nine months of 2025
Egg production, landed catch and aquaculture production increased compared with the same period of the previous year, while poultry meat, livestock slaughtering and the value of landed catch decreased
According to data compiled by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) from regional enterprises engaged in industrial poultry farming, between January and September 2025, egg production reached approximately 26.0 million units, representing an 8.0% year-on-year increase. Poultry meat, however, fell by 7.0%, totalling 2 601.2 tonnes. In the period from July to September, year-on-year changes of +6.5% and -5.7% were recorded for egg production and poultry meat, respectively.
Data provided by the Slaughter Centre of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (CARAM) show that livestock slaughtering totalled 617.7 tonnes, representing a 3.9% year-on-year decrease in the first three quarters of 2025. This reduction resulted from declines in both cattle (-3.6%) and pig (-25.0%) slaughtering. In the third quarter of 2025, livestock slaughtering decreased by 11.2% year-on-year.
In the fisheries sector, information from the Regional Directorate for Fisheries for the first nine months of 2025 indicates that the period was characterised by an increase in the volume of landed catch (+3.5%), while the first-sale value recorded a slight decrease (-0.6%). During this period, landed catch in the Region amounted to 3 089.8 tonnes, generating first-sale revenues of 14.0 million euros.
Among the main species caught, only tuna and similar species registered an increase compared with the first nine months of 2024 (+39.5%), being the main contributors to the overall rise observed. Conversely, black scabbardfish recorded a 4.3% decline year-on-year. In value terms, the pattern was similar, with tuna and similar species rising by 32.9%, and black scabbardfish decreasing by 7.0%. It is worth noting that, in the period under review, 60.3% of the total value of catches corresponded to black scabbardfish, and that, since August, blue jack mackerel and chub mackerel catches have resumed following the end of the temporary suspension of purse-seine fishing for small pelagic species. In the third quarter of 2025, both the volume and value of landed catch registered year-on-year decreases of 7.1% and 4.3%, respectively.
The average first-sale price of fish (excluding fish landed for self-consumption) stood at 4.62 euros, compared with 4.79 euros in the same period of 2024. The average price of tuna and similar species was 3.85 euros (4.03 euros in the previous year), while that of black scabbardfish reached 4.96 euros (5.05 euros in the first nine months of 2024).

Aquaculture production increased by 6.2% year-on-year
According to information collected by DREM from aquaculture production companies in the Region, between January and September 2025, 1 080.1 tonnes of seabream were produced, representing a 6.2% year-on-year increase. Sales totalled 7.1 million euros, corresponding to a 10.8% increase compared with the same period of the previous year.
By market, 87.2% of sales value was directed to the national market (mainland Portugal and the Azores), while 12.7% corresponded to the regional market.
In the third quarter of 2025, the year-on-year change in production volume and sales value stood at +21.1% and +31.1%, respectively.
