In 2025

Egg production and landed catch increased compared with the previous year, while poultry meat and livestock slaughtering declined

According to data compiled by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) from enterprises in the Region engaged in industrial poultry farming, egg production reached 38.7 million units in 2025, representing an increase of 19.5% compared with the previous year.

In the same year, poultry meat production stood at 3 444.4 tonnes, reflecting a decrease of 2.9% compared with the previous year.

A similar trend was observed in livestock slaughtering, which declined by 8.6% compared with 2024, totalling 805.4 tonnes. This decrease was mainly due to the reduction in cattle slaughtering (-8.4%), although the decline in pigs (-15.0%) also contributed. It should also be noted that cattle accounted for almost all livestock slaughtering (97.8% of the total).

In the fisheries sector, data provided by the Regional Directorate of Fisheries (DRP) indicate that 2025 was characterised by an increase of 2.3% in the volume of landed catch, totalling 3.6 thousand tonnes. However, the value of the first sale decreased by 2.9% compared with 2024, with the annual total amounting to 16.2 million euros.

The positive trend in volume was mainly driven by the increase in catches of tuna and tuna-like species (+39.7%). By contrast, the other main species recorded declines. Black scabbardfish decreased by 4.7% in volume and 8.8% in value. As for blue jack mackerel and chub mackerel catches, given that a fishing ban was in place between February and July 2025, these species recorded significant declines compared with the previous year.

Black scabbardfish was the most abundant species in 2025, totalling 2 192.4 tonnes (61.0% of total landings), followed by tuna and tuna-like species, with 1 237.2 tonnes (34.4% share). In terms of first-sale revenue, black scabbardfish recorded a decrease of 8.8% compared with 2024, totalling 10.4 million euros, while tuna and tuna-like species showed a significant increase of 33.9%, reaching 4.7 million euros.

In 2025, the average price of fish at first sale (excluding fish landed for self-consumption) decreased to 4.59 euros (4.83 euros in 2024). For black scabbardfish, the average price stood at 4.84 euros (5.05 euros in 2024), while for tuna and tuna-like species it was 3.86 euros (4.01 euros in 2024).

Aquaculture production and sales increased

According to data collected by DREM from aquaculture production companies in the Region, in 2025 a total of 1 363.3 tonnes of seabream were produced, representing an increase of 0.1% compared to 2024. Sales amounted to approximately 9.1 million euros, rising by 7.1% year-on-year.

By market, it is observed that 86.6% of the sales value corresponds to the national market (mainland Portugal and the Azores), while only 13.3% corresponded to the regional market.
