Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira releases Agriculture and Fishery Statistics for 2023
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has published statistical information regarding Agriculture and Fisheries for the year 2023. In addition to the tables available on the website, an annual publication includes an analysis of results, from which the following points summarize the sector's evolution in the above-mentioned year:
Agriculture: Production of banana and Vitis Vinifera grapes increased, while potato and sugar cane output decreased
- Among temporary crops, potato remains the highest-volume crop (16,639 tonnes), although there was a decrease of 23.8% compared to 2022. Sugar cane emerged as the second most relevant production in this group, with 8,860 tonnes, a decrease of 1,188 tonnes (-11.8%) from 2022.
- In permanent crops, production of banana (26,471 tonnes; +10.8% compared to the previous year) and Vitis Vinifera grapes (4,065 tonnes; +0.8% compared to 2022) increased.
- Notably, 84.7% of GESBA's marketed bananas were of the extra class (81.4% in 2022). Regarding grapes - sourced from the Instituto do Vinho, Bordado e Artesanato da Madeira (IVBAM, I.P.) - 73.2% of the total production consisted of Tinta Negra (76.5% in 2022).
Animal Production: Egg production and poultry meat production increased; slaughtered livestock decreased
- In the industrial poultry sector, egg production reached 32.7 million units, a 6.4% increase compared to the previous year. A similar trend was observed in poultry meat production, with a volume of approximately 3.5 thousand tonnes, representing a 6.9% increase from 2022.
- The total weight of slaughtered livestock approved for population consumption amounted to 959.0 tonnes (net stripped), a 6.3% decrease from the previous year. This drop reflects a decline in bovine slaughter (-6.4%), which was the most slaughtered species (93.7% of the total).
Fisheries: Increase in value despite a slight decline in landed catch
- The total volume of fish unloaded in ports in the Region decreased by 0.2%, with the annual total standing at 4.7 thousand tonnes. Meanwhile, the first-sale receipts increased by 17.1%, totalling around 18.2 million euros.
- The decline in volume was primarily due to reduced black scabbardfish catches (-6.2%), although chub mackerel and other species also decreased by -0.3% and -32.6%, respectively. Conversely, tuna and similar catches increased by 6.7% compared to the previous year.
- Black scabbardfish was the most abundant species in 2023, totalling 2,118.7 tonnes (45.1% of total landings), followed by tuna and similar at 2,056.8 tonnes (43.7%). In terms of first-sale revenue, black scabbardfish saw a significant 33.2% increase compared to 2022, totalling 9.9 million euros, while tuna and similar increased by 1.5% to 6.3 million euros.
- In 2023, the Region produced 1,395.0 tonnes of seabream in marine aquaculture establishments, a 12.7% decrease from 2022. Sales amounted to approximately 7.9 million euros, a 5.9% decrease from the previous year. Marketwise, 87.8% of sales value pertained to the national market (mainland and Azores), with only 12.1% to the regional market.
Economic Accounts of Agriculture and Agricultural Product Exports: Agricultural output rose in 2022, but the Gross Value Added shrank
- The Regional Economic Accounts for Agriculture (CEAREG) provisional data show that agricultural output in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) reached 122.1 million euros in 2022, marking an 18.7% nominal increase from the previous year. However, intermediate consumption rose by 48.7%, leading to a 9.5% nominal decrease in Gross Value Added (GVA) in agriculture between 2021 and 2022, settling at 48.0 million euros.
- 21.6 thousand tonnes of bananas were exported.
Agricultural Prices: Producer and means of production prices indexes in agriculture increased
- In 2023, the producer prices index for agricultural goods grew by 15.0% compared to 2022, driven by increases in both crop output (+15.6%) and animal output (+9.6%). Notable increases were observed in potatoes (+52.3%), vegetables and horticultural products (+15.9%), including fresh vegetables (+16.6%), and sugar cane (+12.1%). Animal output growth was attributed to a 31.6% increase in the egg price index.
- Conversely, the prices index of means of production of current consumption in agriculture rose by 8.0% compared to the previous year, primarily due to increases in the fertiliser and soil improvers index (+46.5%), plant protection products (+4.1%), and building maintenance (+3.9%). Conversely, the energy and lubricants price index (-7.0%) decreased due to lower fuel prices.
