In 2022,
Turnover, persons employed and number of establishments of non-financial enterprises in the Autonomous Region of Madeira reached historical highs
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), after having released final information for 2022 about enterprises last January, provides today on its official statistics website the also final data about establishments of non-financial enterprises in the region for that same year.
With the increasing prominence of large brands, particularly in the trade sector - as evidenced by the annual information from the Large-sized Commercial Units (LSCU) project - the information about establishments assumes significant importance. It should be noted that an enterprise, headquartered anywhere in the country, may have several establishments located in different areas of the territory. Thus, there are establishments located in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) that belong to enterprises headquartered outside the ARM, and there are also enterprises from the ARM with establishments in the Mainland and/or the Autonomous Region of the Azores.
In 2022, there were 34,035 establishments of non-financial enterprises in the ARM, employing about 95,616 persons and generating a turnover of 9.5 billion euros.
The number of establishments increased by 2,291 (+7.2%) compared to the previous year, contributing significantly to this evolution, due to their share in the total number of establishments, the "Information and communication activities" (+18.4%), the "Arts, entertainment, sports and recreation activities" (+16.0%), the "Real estate activities" (+15.2%), and the "Accommodation and food service activities" (+11.8%). Calheta (+10.9%) and Santa Cruz (+10.7%) were the municipalities with the highest relative growth in the number of establishments compared to 2021, followed by Funchal (+7.6%), Ponta do Sol (+6.5%), and Ribeira Brava (+6.4%).
In terms of geographical distribution, the location of establishments coincides with the location of enterprises: highlighting the municipalities of Funchal (50.1%), Santa Cruz (13.6%), and Câmara de Lobos (9.3%), a hierarchy also observed at the level of persons employed, with those municipalities, in the same order, concentrating 60.1%, 11.5%, and 7.0% of total employment.
Compared to 2021, the persons employed increased by 8.1% (+7,202 workers), with special contributions to this increase from the municipalities of Calheta (+9.9%), Funchal (+8.8%), Porto Santo (+7.9%), Câmara de Lobos, Ponta do Sol, and Porto Moniz (tied with +7.8%). In terms of persons employed, the sectors of activity that stood out in terms of growth were "Information and communication activities" (+14.8%), "Accommodation and food service activities" (+14.5%), "Administrative and support service activities" (+14.0%), and " Arts, entertainment, sports and recreation activities " (+12.6%).
The turnover of establishments of regional non-financial enterprises increased by 33.4% compared to the previous year, with notable growths in "Accommodation and food service activities " (+70.6%), "Consultancy, scientific and technical activities" (+48.1%), "Administrative and support service activities" (+47.0%), "Electricity, gas, steam, cold and hot water, and cold air” (+42.0%), and "Information and communication activities" (+39.6%). All municipalities had positive year-on-year changes, with Porto Moniz (+189.2%), Calheta (+45.2%), Porto Santo (+39.5%), Ponta do Sol (+35.7%), and Funchal (+35.0%) standing out.
It is worth mentioning that establishments in the "Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles" (43.9%), "Accommodation and food service activities" (10.2%), "Construction" (9.1%), "Transportation and storage" (6.5%), and "Manufacturing" (4.8%) sectors have the largest shares in total turnover.
DREM released the publication "Business Sector of the ARM-2022"
With the information on establishments for 2022 already available, DREM released today the publication "Business Sector of ARM-2022," thus completing the time series (2008-2022) of the same statistical area.
