In 2023
Turnover of non-financial enterprise establishments in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 10.3% compared to the previous year, while persons employed rose by 7.1%
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), having published final data on enterprises for 2023 in January of this year, provides now, via its official statistics website, final data regarding the establishments of non-financial enterprises in the Region for the same year.
In a context of growing dominance by major brands—particularly in the retail trade sector, as evidenced by the annual data from the “Large Sized Commercial Units” (LSCU) project—the relevance of statistical information on establishments has increased considerably. It is important to note that an enterprise headquartered in any part of the country may operate multiple establishments across different territorial zones. Accordingly, there are establishments located in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) belonging to enterprises headquartered outside the Region, as well as ARM-based enterprises operating establishments on the mainland and/or in the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

In 2023, there were 35 820 non-financial enterprises operating in the ARM, employing approximately 102 359 persons and generating a total turnover of 10.4 billion euros.
The number of establishments grew by 1 785 (+5.2%) compared to the previous year. The main contributors to this increase were the sectors of “Information and communication activities” (+22.4%), “Accommodation and food service activities” (+13.3%), “Real estate activities” (+11.2%), and “Other service activities” (+10.3%). The municipalities of Porto Moniz (+9.0%), Ribeira Brava (+8.8%), and Calheta (+8.1%) recorded the highest relative growth in the number of establishments compared to 2022, followed by Porto Santo (+6.8%), São Vicente (+6.3%), and Machico (+5.8%).
Geographically, the distribution of establishments mirrors that of enterprise headquarters, with the municipalities of Funchal (49.8%), Santa Cruz (13.5%), and Câmara de Lobos (9.3%) standing out. This hierarchy is also reflected in the distribution of employment, with the same municipalities accounting for 59.6%, 11.9%, and 6.9% of total employment, respectively.
Compared with 2022, the number of persons employed increased by 7.1% (+6,743 persons), with notable contributions from the municipalities of Porto Moniz (+14.6%), Santa Cruz (+11.2%), Calheta (+10.5%), Santana (+10.1%), Porto Santo (+9.0%), Machico (+7.5%), and São Vicente (+6.4%). In terms of sectoral performance, the most significant employment growth was observed in “Real estate activities” (+16.9%), “Human health and social work activities” (+16.0%), “Arts, entertainment, sports, and recreation activities” (+14.0%), and “Construction” (+11.9%).
The turnover of non-financial enterprises in the Region recorded a year-on-year increase of 10.3%, with particularly strong growth seen in “Education” (+34.2%), “Accommodation and food service activities” (+28.0%), “Arts, entertainment, sports, and recreation activities” (+26.8%), “Professional, scientific and technical activities” (+23.0%), and “Construction” (+22.4%). All municipalities posted positive annual growth rates, with Porto Moniz (+43.2%), Santana (+17.3%), Câmara de Lobos (+16.0%), and Santa Cruz (+15.2%) standing out.
It should also be noted that establishments engaged in “Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” (42.0%), “Accommodation and food service activities” (11.9%), “Construction” (10.1%), “Transport and storage” (6.6%), and “Administrative and support service activities” (4.9%) accounted for the largest shares of total turnover.
DREM releases the publication “Business Sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira – 2023”
With the data on establishments for 2023 now available, DREM publishes the report entitled “Business Sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira – 2023”, thereby completing the time series (2008–2023) for this statistical domain.
