DREM updates Territorial Statistics

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has released today, on its website, a set of tables with updated information regarding territorial statistics. This information pertains to the territory, specifically addressing values related to areas, perimeters, and altimetry of the revised and updated version of the Official Administrative Map of Portugal, CAOP2023. In the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), responsibility for this data falls to the Regional Directorate for Territorial Planning (DROTe).  

Additionally, information is provided on resident population figures at the parish level (2021 Census), including population density, data on the territorial structure, extreme points, and major mountain systems, as well as details regarding protected areas and Natura 2000 Network areas by municipality, supplied by the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation, IP-RAM.

In 2023, 58.3% of the ARM’s surface area was classified as protected

Within the scope of protected areas—terrestrial or marine zones where biodiversity or other natural features of special relevance, due to their rarity, scientific, ecological, or scenic value, require specific conservation and management measures—it was observed that, in 2023, 46.7 thousand hectares (terrestrial area) of the ARM held this status, representing 58.3% of the surface area.

The Natural Park spanned 44.4 thousand hectares, corresponding to 55.4% of the ARM's terrestrial surface. Notably, the municipality of Porto Moniz had 83.9% (6 957 ha) of its surface area designated as part of the Natural Park.

The network of Natural Monuments covered 5.3 thousand terrestrial hectares, with 22.3% (1 184 ha) located in Santana, 18.6% (988 ha) in Ponta do Sol, and 16.3% (868 ha) in Câmara de Lobos.

The Natural Reserve encompassed 1.7 thousand terrestrial hectares.

In 2023, 31.5% of the ARM’s surface area was classified as Natura 2000 Network

The Natura 2000 Network—an EU ecological network aimed at preserving biodiversity through the protection and conservation of natural habitats and endangered species, ensuring their long-term survival—includes areas designated as Sites of Community Importance (SCIs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs).

In 2023, the Natura 2000 Network covered 25.2 thousand hectares of the ARM (31.5% of the terrestrial area), of which 24.3% (6.1 thousand hectares) in Porto Moniz, 20.9% (5.3 thousand hectares) in São Vicente, and 17.2% (4.3 thousand hectares) in Santana.
