In 2022
Number of divorces increased compared to the previous year, reaching the highest value in the last 4 years
Provisional data on marriages dissolved by divorce indicate that in 2022, 553 divorces were decreed for couples whose family residence was in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, up by 102 over 2021. This corresponds to a crude divorce rate of 2.2‰ (compared to 1.8‰ in 2021).
While Porto Moniz had the lowest divorce rate (1.2‰) in the Region, Santa Cruz and Porto Santo had higher numbers of divorces per thousand inhabitants (2.8‰ in both municipalities).
The majority of decreed divorces were related to opposite-sex couples. There were 2 divorces between females and 1 divorce between males.
In 2022, 64.7% of the decreed divorces were "by mutual consent," while the remaining 35.3% resulted from divorces decreed "without the consent of one of the spouses."
The average age at the time of divorce was 48.1 years for men and 45.8 years for women (compared to 48.0 years and 45.4 years in 2021, respectively).
Of the divorces decreed in 2022, 73.1% resulted from marriages lasting 10 years or longer, while 26.9% occurred in marriages of less than 10 years. It is worth noting that 46.7% of the divorces decreed were from marriages lasting 20 years or more, with a particular focus on the 20-24 years group (104 divorces; 18.8%). Additionally, 15.7% of divorces resulted from marriages lasting 30 years or more.
