Results of the Regional Development Composite Index show that the Autonomous Region of Madeira leads in environmental quality

In the first year of the COVID – 19 pandemic in Portugal, the results of the 2020 Regional Development Composite Index (RDCI) released today by Statistics Portugal (INE) reveal a decrease of the territorial disparity results in the environmental quality and cohesion indexes and an increase in the disparity in the competitiveness index.

The Área Metropolitana de Lisboa remains the NUTS 2 region that exceeds the national average in terms of regional development, with the global index (aggregation of competitiveness, cohesion and environmental quality indexes) at 105.96, thus reaching the minimum value of the series started in 2011. In the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the index stood at 95.77 in 2020, representing a decrease when compared with 2019 (97.29) The Autonomous Region of Azores scored 89.58, the lowest value among NUTS 2 regions.

The competitiveness index was also higher in Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (113.45), once again the only region above the country’s average. The Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira have the worse results, with Madeira scoring a value of 88.55 in 2020 (90.88 in 2019) and Azores 81.32.

The values of the cohesion index are more balanced than the previous index at least for mainland Portugal. The Autonomous Region of the Azores has the lowest cohesion index (82.33), while Madeira scored 88.93 in this indicator.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira was the leading NUTS 2 region (and also NUTS 3 region) in the environmental quality index in the year 2020 (110.98), ahead of the Autonomous Region of the Azores (106.38).
