Passenger traffic at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 7.1% year-on-year

According to information provided by ANA - Airports of Portugal to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in May 2024, the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded a movement of 451.2 thousand passengers, transported on 2,995 commercial flights, representing year-on-year changes of +7.1% and +4.5%, respectively.

In the first five months of 2024, changes in aircraft and passenger movements were -1.5% and +3.2%, respectively.

Each aircraft (considering both landings and take-offs) transported, on average, approximately 156 passengers (153 in May 2023) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport, this figure achieved 91 passengers (86 in the same month of the previous year).

In May 2024, passenger movement at airports in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 4.3% in international traffic and 10.3% in the domestic segment.

At Madeira Airport, international traffic (54.1%) predominated over domestic (45.9% of the total). At Porto Santo Airport, there was a preponderance of domestic traffic (78.0% of the total), although with less disparity compared to April 2024.

In this reference month, regular flights at the ARM airports accounted for 92.3% of the total aircraft movements and 95.1% of passengers (91.3% and 93.2% in the same period last year, respectively).

In May 2024, the occupancy of aircraft movements at the ARM airports was around 89.0%, with Madeira Airport reaching 89.8% and Porto Santo at 77.9%. In the same period of the previous year, the occupancy rate was lower, at 87.1%, 88.0%, and 74.7%, in that order.

From January to May 2024, passengers embarked and disembarked at the ARM airports totalled 1,948.0 thousand, with half corresponding to traffic exclusively between airports located within the national territory, including internal and domestic connections (47.5% of the total together), and the other half to international traffic (52.5%). In the context of the latter, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for international flights from the ARM airports (29.6%), followed by Germany (20.5%) and France (7.8%).
