DREM releases the transport statistics for the first semester of 2024
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) is releasing transport data for the first six months of 2024, encompassing various modes of transportation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).
Land transport – Increase in public passenger bus transport and decline in new vehicle purchases by residents
According to data collected by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in the 1st semester of 2024, public passenger transport by bus recorded a total of 16.0 million users, an increase of 19.8% year-on-year. Urban lines transported 10.7 million passengers (+25.3% compared to the same period in 2023), while interurban lines carried 5.2 million passengers (+10.0% compared to the same period last year).
From January and June 2024, about 709.4 thousand tickets were sold by cableways installed in the Region (+6.2% than in the same period of 2023), with 95.0% of the tickets sold to adults, 3.6% to children, and the remaining 1.5% to other users (e.g., farmers, residents, students, etc.). During the same period, total revenue stood at approximately 8.8 million euros, a 5.2% increase year-on-year.
Moreover, the Region's registers recorded the transfer of ownership of 7,504 used vehicles in the first semester of 2024, 86.8% of which were passenger cars and 12.1% cargo vehicles. There were also 76 heavy vehicles registered, representing 1.0% of the total.
Compared to the 1st semester of 2023, the number of registrations rose by 208, indicating a year-on-year increase of 2.9%.
According to the information collected by ACAP - Associação Automóvel de Portugal - from the Institute of Records and Notary, in the 1st semester of 2024, a total of 2,804 new vehicles were purchased by residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, reflecting a decrease of 14.5% over the same period in 2023. It should be noted that this variable corresponds to vehicle purchases made by entities resident in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, including those made by rent-a-car companies, and not to sales by car dealerships operating in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Provisional data provided by the Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) show that, in the 1st semester of 2024, 1,765 road accidents were recorded with police intervention, representing a year-on-year decrease of 0.6%. The number of victims were 516, 52 fewer than in the same period in 2023. Of these victims, 486 sustained minor injuries, 28 were seriously injured and 2 were fatalities.
Air transport – Passenger movement at Madeira’s airports increased by 4.2%
The airports of Madeira e Porto Santo recorded a movement of approximately 2.4 million passengers in the 1st semester of 2024, reflecting a 4.2% increase vis-à-vis the same period in 2023. Both airports experienced positive changes in passenger movement, with Madeira and Porto Santo showing annual changes of +4.2% and +3.3%, respectively.
In the semester under review, the occupancy of aircraft handled at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was around 86.8%, with Madeira airport reaching 87.4% and Porto Santo 76.5%. In the same period last year, the occupancy rates were lower, at 83.2%, 83.9% and 70.9%, in that order.
Regarding air cargo, in the 1st semester of this year, the airports of Madeira and Porto Santo saw a 19.7% increase compared to the same semester in 2023. Both airports experienced a year-on-year increase in unloaded goods by 13.0%, while loaded goods rose by 44.3%.
Maritime Transport – Cruise ship transit passengers increased, while goods movement declined
Regarding maritime transport, in the 1st semester of 2024, there were 139 cruise ships entering the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira ,16 fewer than in the same period last year. Despite the lower number of stops compared to the previous year, the number of passengers in transit (337,431) increased by 2.8% compared to 2023.
During the semester under review, the Port of Funchal received 335,373 passengers in transit, the majority of whom were Europeans (91.1%). The main nationalities were German (42.0% of the total; +0.1% compared to the same period in 2023), British (40.1%; +22.9%) and Dutch (1.3%; +32.6%). It should also be noted that American passengers in transit at the Port of Funchal (8.0% of the total) decreased by 35.7% compared to 2023. This drop was mainly due to the decline in North American (6.3% of the total; -14.3% compared to 2023), Canadian (1.1%; -31.5%) and Brazilian (0.3%; -89.8%) passengers.
On the Madeira-Porto Santo line, the number of passengers was approximately 145,2 thousand in the 1st semester of this year, a decrease of 5.9% compared to the same period in 2023.
The movement of goods in the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira during the referenced semester was overall negative compared to the same period last year (-4.4%). This drop was driven by a decline in unloading (-5.5%), although there was an increase in loading (+ 5.4%).
Between January and June 2024, a total of 868 recreational vessels entered the marinas of the Region, carrying 1,980 crew members and passengers.
