DREM releases the transport statistics for the third quarter of 2024 and a time series for the period 1975-2023
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) is releasing transport data for the third quarter of 2024, encompassing various modes of transportation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).
Land transport – Rise in transfers of used vehicles from January to September 2024 and decline in new vehicle acquisitions
According to the data collected by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), from January to September of 2024, public passenger transport by bus recorded a total of 16.0 million users in urban lines, an increase of 25.2% year-on-year.
In the first nine months of 2024, about 1 108.8 thousand tickets were sold by cableways installed in the Region (+4.9% than in the same period of 2023). Of these, 94.3% were sold to adults, 4.1% to children and the remaining 1.6% to other users (e.g. farmers, residents, students, etc.). For the same period, total revenue stood at approximately 13.6 million euros, a 4.7% increase year-on-year. It's worth noting that in the third quarter of 2024, there were year-over-year lower increases in ticket sales (+2.7%), as well as in revenue (+3.8%).
Moreover, the Registers of the Region recorded, in the 3rd quarter of 2024, the transfer of ownership of 3,809 used vehicles, 86.8% of which were passenger cars and 11.9% were cargo vehicles. There were also 45 heavy vehicles registered, representing 1.2% of the total. Compared to the 3rd quarter of 2023, the number of registrations rose by 163, meaning a year-on-year increase of 4.5%. In the first nine months of 2024, this indicator showed growth (+3.4%) compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
According to the information collected by ACAP - Associação Automóvel de Portugal - from the Institute of Records and Notary, from January to September of 2024, a total of 4,808 new vehicles were purchased by residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, reflecting a year-on-year decline of 5.7%. However, in the 3rd quarter of 2024, 2,004 new vehicles were registered, an increase of 10.2% (+185 vehicles). It should be noted that this variable corresponds to vehicle purchases made by entities resident in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, including those made by rent-a-car companies, and not to sales by car dealerships operating in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Provisional data provided by the Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) show that, from January to September of 2024, 2,838 road accidents were recorded with police intervention, which means a year-on-year increase of 3.7%. The number of victims was 891 (minus 12 over the same period in 2023), of that number of victims, 829 were counted as minor injuries, 53 as serious injuries and 9 as fatalities.
Air transport – Passenger movement at the Autonomous Region of Madeira’s airports grew by 3.9% in the first nine months of 2024
The airports of Madeira e Porto Santo recorded a movement of approximately 1.4 million passengers, in the 3rd quarter of 2024, showing a 3.4% increase vis-à-vis the same period in 2023. This growth was due to the increase of +3.9% at Madeira airport, as Porto Santo airport recorded a drop of -3.0%. Between January and September 2024, there was a year-on-year increase of 3.9% in the movement of passengers in both airports in the ARM.
In the first nine months under review, the occupancy of aircraft handled at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was around 88.0%, with Madeira airport reaching 88.5% and Porto Santo at 80.0%. In the same period last year, the occupancy rate was lower, at 85.4%, 86.1% and 75.0%, in the same order. In the 3rd quarter of 2024, the occupancy rate was higher, registering 90.1% at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (+0.9 pp compared to the same period of 2023), 90.6% at Madeira airport (+0.5 pp compared to the 3rd quarter of 2023) and 84.1% at Porto Santo airport (+4.1 pp compared to the same reference period).
Regarding air cargo, in the 3rd quarter of this year, the airports of Madeira and Porto Santo had an increase of 24.3% towards the same quarter of 2023. In both airports unloaded goods increased by 10.1% year-on-year, as well as the loaded goods increased by 46.9%. In the year-to-date, the changes were 21.2%, 12.0%, and 45.1%, respectively.
Maritime transport – Goods movement in ports registered a slight increase in the period from January to September 2024
Regarding maritime transport, in the first nine months of 2024, there were 161 cruise ships entering the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (minus 7 than the same period last year). Despite the lower number of stops compared to the previous year, the number of passengers in transit (386,057) increased towards 2023 (+5,3%).
Between January and September, the Port of Funchal received 383,928 passengers in transit, the majority Europeans (90.1%). The main nationalities were British (44.6% of the total; +23.5% than in the same period of 2023), German (37.0% of the total; +0.6% than in 2023). It should also be noted that American passengers in transit at the Port of Funchal (8.8% of the total) decreased by 24.6% compared to 2023. The nationalities that contributed to this decrease were the North American (6.9% of the total; -1.4% than in 2023), the Canadian (1.4% of the total; -16.4% than in 2023) and the Brazilian (0.3% of the total; -89.5% than in 2023).
On the Madeira-Porto Santo line, the number of passengers was approximately 316.9 thousand, having decreased by 3.1% compared to the same nine months of 2023. In the third quarter of 2024, the number of passengers on this line (171,7 thousand) decreased by -0.6% year-over-year.
The movement of goods in the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, in the period of reference, was slightly positive towards the same period last year (+0.7%). This change contributed to the increase observed in the unloading (+0.8%) and in the loading (+0,1%). It's worth noting that in the third quarter of 2024, the year-over-year increase in the total movement of goods was 10.2%.
From January to September 2024, a total of 1,556 recreational vessels entered the region's marinas, with 3,572 crew members and passengers. In the third quarter of 2024, these two indicators corresponded to 688 vessels and 1,592 crew members and passengers, respectively.
