In 2023

Malignant neoplasms stood out as the leading cause of death among residents aged between 30 and 74 years, whereas Diseases of the circulatory system prevailed as the principal cause of death among residents aged 75 years and over

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) today releases data on the causes of death in 2023 for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), broken down by municipality, age group, and sex. The time series of Health Statistics now includes the number of deaths by cause of death according to the “adapted OECD list”, together with the corresponding mortality rates. Mortality rates due to Diseases of the circulatory system and Malignant neoplasms are also made available by municipality for the period 2002–2023.

In 2023, there were 2 791 deaths among residents of the ARM, representing a decrease of 10.1% compared with 2022 (3,104 deaths). Of these, 1 369 were male (49.1%) and 1 422 female (50.9%). The masculinity ratio at death was therefore 96.3, meaning that for every 100 female deaths, 96.3 male deaths were recorded. At the national level, this ratio stood at 100.4. In the year under review, the crude mortality rate in the ARM was 10.9‰, compared with 11.2‰ in the country as a whole.

By age group, one infant death (under 1 year of age) was recorded, corresponding to an infant mortality rate of 0.6‰ (1.7‰ in 2022). The cause of death was classified as Certain conditions originating in the perinatal period. There were four deaths among children aged 1 to 14 years, two of which were due to Malignant neoplasms. Among young persons aged 15 to 24 years, 10 deaths were recorded. The principal causes were Transport accidents and sequelae (3 deaths) and Malignant neoplasms (3 deaths). In the 25 to 64 years age group, 514 deaths occurred, with Malignant neoplasms (182 deaths), Diseases of the circulatory system (107 deaths), and External causes of death (59 deaths) as the leading causes. In the 65 to 84 years group, 1,252 deaths were recorded, with Malignant neoplasms (339 deaths), Diseases of the circulatory system (313 deaths, of which 102 were due to Ischaemic heart diseases), and Diseases of the respiratory system (186 deaths, including 94 due to Pneumonia) as the main causes. Finally, among the 1 010 deaths of residents aged 85 years and over, Diseases of the circulatory system (298 deaths) and Diseases of the respiratory system (200 deaths, of which 114 due to Pneumonia) were particularly significant.

At the municipal level, the municipality of Funchal accounted for the highest proportion of deaths, with 1 224 (43.9%), followed by Santa Cruz (376; 13.5%) and Câmara de Lobos (266; 9.5%). Together, these three municipalities accounted for 66.9% of all deaths in the ARM. Conversely, the municipalities of Porto Santo (53; 1.9%), Porto Moniz (55; 2.0%), São Vicente (82; 2.9%), and Santana (94; 3.4%) each reported fewer than 100 deaths, accounting jointly for 10.2% of the regional total.

In 2023, in the ARM, Diseases of the circulatory system remained the leading cause of death, corresponding to 25.8% of the total, as well as being the main cause of death in the municipalities of Calheta, Funchal, Ponta do Sol, Porto Moniz, Santana, and São Vicente. In Câmara de Lobos, Santa Cruz, and Machico, the principal cause of death was Malignant neoplasms, while in Ribeira Brava, Diseases of the respiratory system were predominant (40 of the 160 deaths). The mortality rate for Diseases of the circulatory system was 2.8‰, equal to that observed at the national level. By municipality, the highest rates for this cause were recorded in Porto Moniz (8.8‰), followed by São Vicente (5.1‰) and Santana (4.9‰). The lowest rates were observed in Porto Santo (1.8‰), Santa Cruz (1.9‰), and Câmara de Lobos (2.0‰).

Mortality from Malignant neoplasms was the second leading cause of death in the ARM in 2023, with 649 deaths (23.3% of the total), corresponding to a mortality rate of 2.5‰, slightly below the national rate of 2.7‰. The municipalities of Funchal (296 deaths), Santa Cruz (92), Câmara de Lobos (67), and Machico (57) reported the highest numbers of deaths from this cause. In all other municipalities, the number of deaths was below 30, with Porto Moniz registering only 10. In terms of mortality rates, Porto Moniz (4.0‰), São Vicente (3.7‰), Santana and Porto Santo (both 3.1‰), Machico (2.9‰), and Funchal (2.8‰) exceeded the regional average (2.5‰). The lowest mortality rates were recorded in Ribeira Brava (2.0‰), Câmara de Lobos, and Santa Cruz (both 2.1‰).

It is noteworthy that in 2023, mortality from Malignant neoplasms exceeded that from Diseases of the circulatory system in the municipalities of Porto Santo (3.1‰ vs 1.8‰), Machico (2.9‰ vs 2.5‰), Santa Cruz (2.1‰ vs 1.9‰), and Câmara de Lobos (2.1‰ vs 2.0‰).
