In the first quarter of 2025
Egg production increased year-on-year, whereas poultry meat, livestock slaughter and landed catch registered declines
According to data collected by the Regional Statistics Directorate of Madeira (DREM) from enterprises engaged in industrial poultry farming in the Region, egg production in the first quarter of 2025 totalled approximately 7.3 million units, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 3.1%.
In contrast, livestock slaughter during the same period decreased by 15.9% compared with the first quarter of the previous year, amounting to 774.1 tonnes.
Similarly, figures provided by the Slaughter Centre of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (CARAM) indicate that the slaughtered livestock stood at 166.5 tonnes, a reduction of 1.1% compared to the first quarter of 2024.
Within the fisheries sector, data collected by the Regional Directorate for Fisheries pertaining to the first quarter of 2025 reveal a year-on-year decline in the volume of landed catch (-31.7%) and in the value of first sales (-33.4%). Over the initial three months of the current year, the landed catch in the Region was approximately 570.1 tonnes, generating first-sale revenues of 3.0 million euros.
The main species landed recorded significant year-on-year decreases. In the case of chub mackerel and blue jack mackerel, in addition to the very limited abundance of these species during the first two months of the year, this decline was also due to a “temporary cessation [for 90 days] of purse seine activity targeting small pelagic species, in order to protect the reproductive period of the target species and to ensure their long-term sustainability,” as established by Regional Ordinance No. 157/2025 of 5 March, issued by the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment.
As for the species that are usually the most representative, landings of tuna (and tuna-like species) dropped by 94.8%, while those of black scabbardfish declined by 15.5%. In terms of value, the decreases mirrored those observed in volume: -90.3% for tuna and similar species, and -15.8% for black scabbardfish. Despite these declines, still, the black scabbardfish remained the most caught species, accounting for 92.5% of the total volume and 86.2% of the total value. Tuna and tuna-like species, on the other hand, amounted to only 7.8 tonnes, with a corresponding first-sale value of just 110.8 thousand euros.
The average first-sale price of fish (excluding landings destined for self-consumption) during the reference period was 5.38 euros, a slight decrease from 5.50 euros recorded in the same quarter of 2024. The average price for tuna and tuna-like species rose to 14.25 euros (up from 7.56 euros in the previous year), whereas black scabbardfish registered an average of 5.02 euros, marginally below the 5.04 euros seen during the same period in 2024.

Aquaculture recorded year-on-year declines in both sales value and production
According to information collected by DREM from aquaculture production companies operating in the Region, 256.4 tonnes of sea bream were produced in the first quarter of 2025, representing a 31.6% decline compared to the same quarter in 2024. Similarly, sales revenue stood at 1.5 million euros, corresponding to a year-on-year decrease of 34.8%.
Regarding market distribution, 76.9% of the total sales value derived from the national market (mainland Portugal and the Azores), while 22.9% corresponded to the regional market. In the same quarter of the previous year, these proportions were 89.8% and 10.1%, respectively.
